El orenamiento por categorías es taxonómico, jerárquico, rígido. Como decía, esto se desdibuja con herramientas como el WP que te permite crearlas en cualquier momento. Pero en mi experiencia normalmente las categorías se crean al comenzar un blog y se piensan más, se analiza el conjunto y como sistema. Se piensa cada categoría como parte de un mapa que configura los dominios del blog.
El ordenamiento por etiquetas (tagging) es folcsonómico, anárquico, flexible. Creamos etiquetas con cada posteo, de manera que pensamos más en qué términos representan a ese post y no tanto en cómo define esa etiqueta al blog.

I think of categories as a table of contents and tags as the index page of a book. If I’m searching for a broad topic, unsure of exactly what I need to find or the keywords, then I will hit the table of contents (categories). If I know the exact word I need in order to find the information I want, then I will hit the index page (tags).
