If you would rather just download an audio file (MP3) and print out a copy of the text and follow along, Lit2Go is your place. It would be good if the kid had an MP3 player or just a flash drive. You could put the audio files on there, print out a copy of the text, and then send him on his way to read/listen at his leisure without being attached to the computer. Not very visually friendly, but you can click on SEARCH DATABASE to search by reading level!

Starfall is unique in that it begins with the basics (ABCs), moves through sounds, and finally reads aloud with the kid. It doesn't require any account or anything! Also, the stories in the "I'm Reading" section are clickable. So the kid can click on the words to have them read for him if he has trouble. Great resource because it begins with the basics and then builds from there. Awesome!

This site requires that you sign up for a free account in order to use the interactive stories. It has bunches, grouped into different levels, beginning with Nursery Rhymes, and moving up to Traditional Tales. The kid can login, click the story, and it reads it aloud along with animations. After you start the story, you can turn on/off the words, voice, etc. There are even games as well as printable worksheets to go along with each of the stories!! It's awesome, and FREE! After you register and login, click on the GUIDED READING link to access the stories.
