How to Really Listen to Someone | ThinkSimpleNow.com

Everyone desires to be heard. When we listen to others, we validate their need to be acknowledged and understood. Deep down inside, we all want to know that we matter, that we are important. Don’t you find that meeting someone who shows interest in what we have to say, we tend to take a liking to them instantly?

I’m not asking you to pretend to be interested in hopes of being liked, but rather to pay attention to this often overlooked and forgotten skill. In addition to improving your personal and professional relationships, listening also helps to prevent misunderstandings and facilitates cooperation.

The following are techniques to being an effective listener. I have learned these from communication courses, seminars and books on personal relationships. These are ones I’ve personally found to be useful when engaged in a conversation with other people:

Dealing with Difficult People | ThinkSimpleNow.com

Can you recall the last time you had to deal with a negative or difficult person? Or the last time someone said something with the intention of hurting you? How did you handle it? What was the result? What can you do in the future to get through these situations with peace and grace?

No matter where we go, we will face people who are negative, people who oppose our ideas, people who piss us off or people who simply do not like us. There are 6.4 billion people out there and conflict is a fact of life. This fact isn’t the cause of conflict but it is the trigger to our emotions and our emotions are what drive us back to our most basic survival instinct; react and attack back to defend ourselves.

In these instinctual moments, we may lose track of our higher selves and become the human animal with an urge to protect ourselves when attacked. This too is natural. However, we are the only animal blessed with intelligence and having the ability to control our responses. So how can we do that?

The 7 habits of highly effective information security leaders | IT Security | TechRepublic.com

The balance between operational efficiency and information assurance presents some special challenges. On one side of the scale, business operations need to be as efficient as possible to meet company objectives. On the other side, information security professionals seek to secure sensitive and critical information assets to protect the business, its customers, its employees, and its investors. These two efforts have an inverse relationship; as one increases, the other decreases. So what’s the answer? How do we reconcile these two opposing forces?

In the March 2007 issue of the Communications of the ACM there is an article by Stephen J. Andriole that I believe can help with these challenges (“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Technology Leaders”, p. 67). I borrowed from that article Andriole’s 7 habits of highly effective technology leaders and adapted them in an effort to differentiate security managers from security leaders. It’s the security leader who can strike the right balance between business need and information asset protection.

J.D. Meier's Blog : 7 Habits of Highly Effective Program Managers

What does it take to be an effective Program Manager at Microsoft? I'm responding to some requests for my take on what it takes to be an effective PM. I figured I could use a familiar 7 habits approach to help frame out a start.

To pick a set of habits, I started with a set of reference examples. I used the most effective and ineffective PMs that I've seen over time. I considered their track record, their ability to influence, and their leadership skills. Most importantly I looked at their ability to ship and make the right impact for customers. Next, I looked for the underlying patterns (I'm a principles, practices and patterns guy). I used the ineffective PMs to think of the anti-patterns and the practices of what not to do. This contrast helped me clarify the distinctions between effective and ineffective.

7 Habits of a Highly Successful In-house Web Designer » Standardzilla : Search, Standards and Accessibility

Andy Budd wrote an article a while back on the 7 Habits of a Highly Successful Freelance Web Designer that was an great read, but it also got me thinking. I think most of us want to be freelance web designers or will be at some stage of our lives, but what about those of us that currently work in-house? Small funky agencies, stuffy corporate financial development teams or even large media corporations that can be a bit conservative at times but house a seriously kick-ass in-house media team?

I’ve worked for a few of these and for the fun of it I am going to keep the original 7 Habits intact that Andy Budd wrote of in his original post. I really think the gap between freelance and in-house is fairly subtle, and the type of developer you are will come out in either environment.

Here are a few of my thoughts on how to stay sane whilst working for the man.

7 Habits of Highly Innovative People | ThinkSimpleNow.com

Have you ever looked at super creative or innovative people, and felt they are special beings blessed with gifts? Have you felt that you are not as fortunate? I used to feel this way. I have since learned that creativity is more about psychology than intellect, and there are no secrets to being creative. Actually, there is no such thing as “being more creative”, you are already a creative being.

I’m sure we can all relate to moments when we felt stuck trying to tap into our own creativity. Did you know that this block is merely your mind at work? Your mind is creating all sorts of assumptions, self-imposed constraints and self-limiting inhibitions. I have found that we can remove these assumptions just by being in the moment; start doing, and stop thinking.

Here are seven habits found in highly innovative and creative people that I’ve organized and summarized from Scott Berkun’s “the myths of innovation“.

Trevor Davis | Blog | jQuery Tabbed Navigation

It seems like more and more these days, JavaScript tabbed interfaces are being used. There are plenty of scripts out there, but I think it is important to be able to do things yourself. A lot of JavaScript “plugins” that you will find online will give you way more than you really need, and you may understand how to use it, but you will not really understand what it is really doing.

First, I thought I would walk through creating a tabbed navigation script with jQuery, and then modifying it so that it works without JavaScript.
