Personally, I think it is these practical subjects, such as medicine, construction, architecture etc. where virtual worlds add significant value.

track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.

anti-social behaviour, surely a sign that the virtual ASBO is on its way to disperse rowdy avatars planning to picket UK.gov's virtual embassy in Second Life, for example.

I was talking to a leading lecturer in Chemistry who sees the potential of being able to put together chemical molecules and build models instantly to demonstrate to his students.
I remember when Apple macs first came into the graphics business and our 24 strong team of typesetters laughed and said how poor it was at setting type. Within 1 year, they were all unemployed. SL is in that early infancy.

Update on Wicket collaborative 3D extrusion tool for Croquet

I put the Wicket project on hold to focus on getting Hedgehog out the door and more recently Qwaq Forums. I would like to revisit it sometime next year, but decided I would need a bit more of an externally extensible foundation before pursuing it.

Croquet chief architect and Wicket author has a commercial company called Qwaq.
There are a lot of good non-collaborative tools for making 3D objects, including 3D Studio Max, Blender, Maya, Poser, SketchUp, etc.

It integrates all in one Croquet SDK environment:
1. Freetype fonts and Unicode support (native from Sophie).
Use of any language you want, just point to necessary Freetype font.
2. Rome graphic support (from Rome and Sophie)
3. XUL programming model (native from Sophie)
Alan Kay: The PC Must Be Revamped--Now - Feb 14, 2007
I would really like to see a paper where Kay gives pointers to all the examples he has to hand of better ways of thinking (computer facilitated or not) and an objective defence of _why_ they are better. This is inspirational and revealing, but it isn't t

Cicero said, "Who knows only his own generation remains always a child."...Why doesn't my machine look like an Internet inside? ...
You can think of Croquet as a new way of doing an operating system, or as a layer over TCP/IP that automatically coordinates dynamic objects over the entire Internet in real time....he third project we're just getting started on and don't have completely funded yet, is to make a new kind of user interface that can actually help people learn things, from very mundane things about how their computer system works to more interesting things like math, science, reading and writing. This project came about because of the $100 laptop.... If you think of the purpose of the spreadsheet being not only to tabulate what did happen, but to give you an idea of what could happen, you would immediately redesign the spreadsheet and integrate it with graphical displays or visualization in a very different way. You would be on the road to a different kind of computer literacy....Since the late sixties, I've been interested in the extent to which you could cultivate the kind of thinking skills that only a few people use in the world today, by getting children to learn much more widely and much more fluently than most adults have....
People will attempt to spread our society's pop-culture technology to the Third World as the Third World gets wired up, so there's only a little window of time where you could possibly get children hooked into stuff which requires a lot more learning. It might not be possible, but I can't think of anything that I would rather work on.

Suslov says this is easy. I say that it is awesome.

For example: it is easy to model the real world scene lightning ( transitions and effects with color, moving the computer generated light source in the space of real walls); geometry transformations (dividing, adding new virtual walls); projecting video/3d animations/images synchronously; and so on.
