An Openmoko bike ride - Chris Ball's blog - August 2008
This is a really cool use of a Neo (though a printed map in a plastic map pocket would do pretty much as well, though too heavy for a long trip.)
However it would be a great way to _contribute_ data to OpenStreetMap while keeping fit and reaching route
-
I'm particularly pleased with tangoGPS, which uses data from OpenStreetMap
Palm Pre vs. Apple iPhone: How they stack up - Network World
Nice slideshow. No mention of the Nokia N95 family.
-
These are too often just after-thoughts. The Pre supports the basic element: using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, to connect with data and services on corporate Exchange servers, and push e-mail to the handset. Also supports Wi-Fi Protected Access, and WPA 2, along with 802.1x authentication. iPhone with the 2.0 softare update, also licensed ActiveSync and added support for Cisco IPsec VPN. Both still lag far behind RIM's BlackBerry in this category.

Stylus - Ultimate 5-in-1 Geek Pen
Another stylus that looks pretty good. It can't be very often you need a UV light, unless you buy stuff at car boot sales or yard sales, and want to check it for security marks.

Multi-function Stylus / Pen / Light / Laser pointer - (openmoko)
This is a great stylus, but the ink doesn't last for long (not long at all). It is nice and heavy - I use it for solving puzzles on my Nintendo DS. The laser pointer and torch are handy too (though my torch has gone dull and I don't know how pricey repl

Breaking the vertical oligopoly model and moving to a clear separation of the different parts of the value-chain, with competition in each, would give Ofcom the chance, once again, to be in the vanguard of regulation globally
Obama Phone! | FactoryCity
Can we do something like this for the next UK general election?

the Obama campaign today released an iPhone app that, among other features, enables you to call your friends prioritized by their location in battleground states.
We don’t need no stinking mobile banking! November 2007 « EverythingCU.com World 2.0 Adventure
Heads in sand!

But seriously, calling SMS-banking a niche with little demand is like calling online banking a niche with little demand five or six years ago. Just like personal computers were a niche with little demand in 1983.

Can I Resist the iPhone 3G? - By Reihan Salam - Slate Magazine
Entertaining review, with a bit more colour than most

Apple sells some pretty great computers, and the iPhone 3G is a great smartphone, but I can take only so much abuse.

MINO: Mobile International Network Operator
This new system has won several awards, and seems to be focusing on larger businesses. It does not say how it works, so I imagine it relies on rerouting international calls via a low cost local call to a VOIP gateway. However some people have suggested
-
MiNO combines a Java-based mobile client application with a back-end management tool to set-up and route calls from a mobile phone to international contacts, bypassing today’s expensive international tariff and charge system to save companies 30% to 70% on their international mobile calls.

A complaint about voice quality on mobile phones, and the possible alternatives.

The audio quality over a cell phone, even in the best of conditions, is just not intelligible enough for a professional-quality media production.
po-ru.com: BBC iPlayer fix hacked again! - March 14, 2008
This is only a bit of fun for some coders, as serious TV fans are already downloading DRM-free video directly from the Freeview broadcasts.
All the same, this article, and the linked script, demonstrate why the technical means to allow download to iP
-
The only method that they offer for other platforms requires proprietary software (and while Flash works on x86 Linux, it’s very flaky). Yet when the iPhone doesn’t support this tied-down system, they abandon their previous caution and go right ahead with an unrestricted version.
BBC acts over iPlayer loophole | Technology | Guardian Unlimited
Hmmm.

New of this loophole was an interesting development, because I think the iPlayer's come on in leaps and bounds since they decided (belatedly) to add a streaming client.
Dean Bubley's Disruptive Wireless: Standalone Mobile Apps vs Web Apps on Mobile
Dean lists which apps will work on the web, and which need to be native

Bottom line - I totally agree with Michael that web-based applications are becoming much more important relative to "installed" mobile apps. But I think it's a little early for the obituary, deeply amusing though it is.
A Very Early Preview of Android - November 2007
Ordinary websites look good in Google Android
-
the included web browser in Android is almost as good as the Apple offering. This is not suprising, since the Android browser is based on the same rendering technology that iPhone Safari uses: the open source project WebKit.

Mobile Opportunity: Mobile applications, RIP
Great debate. The gold is in the comments today.

A friend of mine recently discovered that he could get new widgets for his blackberry and he’s been a kid in a candy store ever since, it only took him a year and me telling him to get Google maps....It is a browser based application, but it does something incredibly clever -- the entire application and the encrypted data are stored inside a bookmark. This means it can run while offline, and none of my data is in the cloud....
Anonymous wrote: Funny. You're saying that native development is dead while for the last three years I've had consistent work and record profits....
The American market is strangled by phone companies....There are many "mobile centric" companies / services that use services such as AdMob to monetize their traffic and page-views. It's very similar to the Ad-Sense model, and it's working out pretty well.
