I can't help smiling!
Tomorrow I plan to legally torrent Ubuntu 9.10
Microsoft's grinning robots or the Brotherhood of the Mac. Which is worse? | Charlie Brooker | Comment is free | The Guardian

Add Sticky Notewhereas eerie replicant Mac monks really are everywhere, standing over your shoulder in their charcoal pullovers, smirking with amusement at your hopelessly inferior OS, knowing they're better than you because they use Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.
- I should upgrade to Snow Leopard to go with my woolly pullover. - on 2009-10-28
BBC - dot.life: A week with Windows | Oct 21 2009
informal and enlightening review - I can wait for this (but see me rushing for Ubuntu 9.10 )

Add Sticky NoteThe two things that stood out for me were the ability to hover over open items in the taskbar and see what was happening at a glance - and a function which allows you to snap two open windows alongside each other so that you can compare or maybe transfer information between them.
- sounds nice - on 2009-10-21

Add Sticky Notewhat is really important to Microsoft is not winning over the minority who use Mac OS X or Linux variants, but reconnecting with the many previously loyal customers who were deeply unimpressed by Vista.

Cellan-Jones not up to his usual standards - though this piece is a little too harsh on him.

The Open Sourcerer » Getting your Microsoft Tax Refunded: 10/10 for Amazon UK! [Updated]
"Brilliant. I can’t really praise Amazon enough for that. It was easy, simple and no fuss."

real Free software community around OO.o, that can turn it into
something as diverse, dependable and fun as it should be - there are a
lot of highly clueful people there
Roundtrip to Shanghai via Tokyo » History of Calc Solver | 2007
The Solver made it into ooo-build and so to several Linux distributions, but not into OpenOffice.org itself. Is there a legal problem with making it an external component, or are there StarOffice (Sun Hamburg) employees who would really prefer there were
-
I can understand why you might want to keep a copyright on a large body of code you wrote, but insisting on reassignment to accept code for upstream integration is Sun’s prerogative, and actually a pretty sensible policy from their point of view.
-
It’s impossible to make an even slightest change in how the project is run, even after countless hours of coding and more than 10,000 lines of code generation

Free Software on Windows and Mac | TuxRadar | March 2009
Linux Format magazine's new primer on downloading and installing free and open source software on Windows - everything from simply installing free browsers and office software, to installing a complete GNOME free desktop environment. I am not so keen on the Mac section of the article.
-
Add Sticky NoteOccasionally, you might be asked to install an extra package or two. With Scribus, which is your best option for a free desktop publishing package on Windows, you also need to install Ghostscript to enable PostScript and EPS import and printing.
- some simple extra tasks are sometimes needed to install FOSS on Windows - on 2009-03-24

Add Sticky NoteBut look past the aesthetics and OS X offers the closest Linux experience you can get if you have to spend money.

Stellarium
This is a lovely new open source planetarium app, for Mac and Windows (and source for Linux). Once you realise there are 2 menus one on the lower left edge, and one on the left of the bottom edge, it is a dream to get started.
-
Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
Folder Virtualization Concepts in Windows Vista | Symantec Juice
Some unusual grammar here, but it is probably as good a place to start as any to explore this tricky but necessary operating system feature.
-
To accommodate existing software for Windows that writes to protected file directories, Microsoft provides a backward compatibility technology known as Virtualization. While virtualization enables older applications to run without programmer intervention, it does not guarantee correct behaviour, and many applications will need to be updated to comply with UAC restrictions.

Please can you put a button on all of the iPlayer Radio pages to open in Standalone RealPlayer?
I know there is a workaround by going to the non-graphical page,
Linux Format :: View topic - Linux doesn't preserve the file "modified" date?
Hysteria and common sense

When using rsync between Linux filesystems, the -a option makes more sense as it preserves everything. Use -t with Windows filesystems to avoid the error messages caused by the filesystem being stupid to understand file permissions and ownerships.

Save YouTube Videos To Your Hard Drive - Wired How-To Wiki
Here are some techniques that can not only help you take a YouTube video on the road, but also perhaps get around the excessive CPU usage of Adobe's Flash video player on Linux (this problem causes heat, fan noise, jumpy video and CO2 emissions.)

Alternately you can just use an FLV capable media player like the excellent and free VLC (all platforms).
