'The house that tweets' This 2 minute video interview with Andy Stanford-Clark is much more entertaining than the YouTube interview I bookmarked earlier. Lots of action shots of home telemetry, Andy's Java midlet on his phone, and what I think is a GNOME desktop showing his home's web interface.
YouTube - The house that twitters | Andy Stanford-Clark 2008
Lots of jargon about IBM Java, but the bottom line in this inspiring interview with an IBM Winchester engineer is an automated home that not only twitters about itself, but about the activities of the Isle of Wight ferries.
NHS Wiltshire pandemic influenza response plan
"Version 2.0 30/12/08"
This plan does not mention any public health actions outside the NHS.
"Government guidance may advice local school and childcare closure in the area for approx 2-3
weeks, which may be extended if the pandemic remains in the area. " is a bit vague - since the schools rely on Wiltshire's Director of Public Health to tell them whether to send pupils and staff home.
This is the NHS response plan - which looks great as far as it goes. Where is the public health plan?
Swine Flu - NHS Wiltshire's press release 15.07.09
"The new phase reflects the fact that the virus is spreading at a rate which can no
longer be contained; we now expect to see rapid rises in the number of cases.
NHS Wiltshire, which has well established plans in place, will take the lead in
diagnosing and distributing antivirals across the county. "

Add Sticky NoteStay at home when you are unwell – if you
have a cough and a fever, it is best to stay at home, the
medicines to relieve the symptoms and drink plenty of fluids.
This will speed your recovery and help prevent the spread of
infection to others- I still don't understand why they aren't advising people that have been in close contact with the flu to also stay at home. Where has the advice to use a "flu buddy" gone? - on 2009-07-16
July 15, 2009 - Chippenham, Corsham and Calne schools confirm swine flu cases (From The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald)
-
Mrs Shubrook said the school would never ask parents to keep quiet about the situation and letters home have confirmed this.
July 8, 2009 - More schools and a nursery confirm swine flu cases (From Wiltshire Times)
official advice
-
NHS Wiltshire said anyone with flu-like symptoms, such as a temperature, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, runny noses or vomiting/diarrhoea, should phone their family doctor for advice.
She added that they should not attend the surgery to avoid spreading the infection.

Parking charges Bristol Oncology Hospital | May 2009 | This is Bristol
Although there are 2 sides to this story, someone with a long term illness is unlikely to have much disposable income to spend on parking.
-
"Hospital parking fees are an unfair tax on the sick and vulnerable at a time when we really don't need the stress and hassle."
Mr Cook added: "There was no advance notice that they were going to increase charges at all.

Somerset and Suffolk county councils are now piloting the "truck friendly" sat-navs which produce county and regional freight maps which will offer preferred HGV routes and pinpoint locations of height and weight restricted bridges.

"how many older people were terrorised in the time it took the Police to arrest ... him?"
Not to mention the time to write up the charges, profile his DNA, and give evidence in court. Assuming the paper has got the whole story, I hope the magistrate and the CPS are as disgusted with this as I am.

Add Sticky NoteI wonder how many homes were burgled, how many women were assaulted by their violent partners, how many older people were terrorised in the time it took the Police to arrest and take him to the station!!!
- Kim's comment said it all.
I will be less sympathetic to police complaints about paperwork and lack of resources, after this example of making several days work for themselves. It seems the law requiring compliance with the lawful request of a police office (that I support) is being treated by some officers as an excuse to make unreasonable demands of someone they dislike.
Bristol's force needs to get its priorities sorted out. - on 2009-03-20
