Powerline, HomePlugs and gaming: eight things you should know | Technology | guardian.co.uk | 2008

  • D-Link PowerLine products based on DS2 technology have the capability to add any other notch should the need arise, providing a completely programmable and flexible way to solve any interference regardless of the frequency. This is a unique feature that allows these devices to be 100% radio friendly."
  • "We had to answer lots of questions from BT, we had to go through exhaustive field trials, and we had to conform to all the EMC certifcation, as well BS1363 parts 1,2,3. I can't stress this enough, we'd like to engage with the Radio Society, but in a constructive manner. It is a concern, but we believe we've addressed and continue to address that concern".

BBC iPlayer Launches In December | Join Freesat | Nov 2009

Noisy debate about home plugs. The alternative to homeplugs in my house is to run Cat 5 cable up the walls and along the ceilings. So ugly that I will never be allowed to do it.

Broadband home-networks Wi-Fi

  • I would ask people to avoid using homeplugs to connect the internet as there is an ongoing dispute, involving OFCOM about the compatibility of these devices with the Shortwave Radio spectrum. Certain makes of homeplugs may yet be made illegal.
  • Bt are removing the homeplugs if asked by Ofcom because it is a know issue

po-ru.com: BBC iPlayer fix hacked again! - March 14, 2008

This is only a bit of fun for some coders, as serious TV fans are already downloading DRM-free video directly from the Freeview broadcasts.

All the same, this article, and the linked script, demonstrate why the technical means to allow download to iP

  • The only method that they offer for other platforms requires proprietary software (and while Flash works on x86 Linux, it’s very flaky). Yet when the iPhone doesn’t support this tied-down system, they abandon their previous caution and go right ahead with an unrestricted version.

Airport Network Compromised [Archive] - The macosxhints Forums

  • The MIC is susceptible to brute force attacks, so each MIC failure is assumed to be an attack. The host station and AP are required to re-key after the first attack. Any station, host station or AP will stop all communications for 60 seconds on a second attack.

Security Wi-Fi IP networking

  • In my opinion, securing my wireless network isn't worth it. And I appreciate everyone else who keeps an open wireless network, including all the coffee shops, bars and libraries I have visited in the past, the Dayton International Airport where I started writing this and the Four Points Sheraton where I finished. You all make the world a better place.

  • The beam travels at the speed of light and penetrates the skin to a depth of 1/64 of an inch, producing an intolerable heating sensation that causes the targeted individuals to instinctively flee or take cover. The sensation ceases immediately when an individual moves out of the beam or the operator steers the beam away. Silent Guardian does not cause injury because of the shallow penetration depth of the millimetre wave.

Sifry's Alerts: EFF comments on FCC Unlicensed Spectrum Proposal - 2003

  • The more interesting band IMHO is the TV bands, because of the potential for use in wireless broadband uses. The lower the frequency, the less aggregate bandwith is possible, but the greater the penetrating power. And for wireless internet connectivity, directed beams of unlicensed transmitters in these lower bands could more effectively penetrate foliage and into structures.
