How to Test Your Hard Drive with Smartmontools
Gentle intro to smartmontools

If there is still reason for worry, and a couple of hours to do something else while the long test runs, then:

One thing I specifically didn't do was install Wine, or even mention it existed. Given their amazing ability to attract malware, I think it is just too dangerous.
Cool Solutions: Compressed Drive Imaging over a Network
Michael Farrel uses bzip2 rather than dd and gzip. This might be a bit heavy on older processors, but if you have a narrow network pipe, go for it.
-
netcat -l -p 12345 |bzip2 -d | dd of=/dev/hda
The -l switch tells netcat that you are listening for an incoming connection. The -p switch specifies which port you are listening on which is left to your discretion. The network input, when received is then piped into the bzip2 decompressor which in turn sends its data to the dd imaging utility and thus, the hard drive itself. The compression is used to save network bandwidth and is entirely optional. Additionally, you are welcome to use gzip in place of bzip2 if bzip2 is either unavailable or undesired.
A graphical overview of the receive pipeline can be seen on the right.
Setting up the host machine
Now that the destination machine is ready, its time to send the drive over the network to it from the host machine. This is done via the one-liner below
bzip2 -c /dev/sda | netcat 192.168.2.4 12345

-
On Server B (receiving):
# nc l p 1010 | dd of=/tmp/image.dd
This will now sit and wait for incoming data and write it to the image file.
On Server A, you need to start sending that data:
# dd if=/dev/sda | nc 192.168.0.1 1010

People have coped in CVS for years, though with some swearing and sweating and some bugs that accidentally came in through incorrect merges. The whole point of changing is to get something which will make development more efficient and pleasant. I think the point where changesets can start to pay off is pretty low.
Distributed vs. Centralized Version Control

I think the private workflow so touted by distributed systems is a total non-feature, even an anti-feature.

tree-oriented versus changeset-oriented - brought into relief
-
What revision control is really about (archival, access, and manipulation of changesets) is subtle and _non_-intuitive." This is a subtle and important point, one which divides the centralized or tree-oriented version control systems (Perforce, Clearcase, CVS, Subversion) from the changeset-oriented ones (Bitkeeper, Arch). A full treatment of this issue could fill multiple journal articles, but one should recognize that it is an issue with two sides: * Changeset-oriented version control is more powerful, but it is power which is largely unnecessary in all but the most chaotic of development projects. * Changeset-oriented version control is harder to learn. In many environments, a shallow learning curve is the most important feature of a version control system. * Changeset-oriented version control is hard to get right.

read the comments to this blog entry too - apparently people have experienced this with Firewire, SCSI, DVI, Compact Flash, A/V, Zip and Jaz cartridges ...
-
It infects Mac laptops and speads via the DVI adapters. An infected adapter will infect any computer that uses it, causing that computer to infect any adapters that it comes into contact with in the future, etc. ... If a firewire cable is inserted upside down (easy on most any PC, or any G4 tower), it will kill the port on both the device and the computer.... The pin-bending virus has been around for a long time, though. I remember it happening with the 68-pin “Honda” connectors used on SCSI devices in the mid ’90s:...As for mini-DVI computers not being susceptible, true. The actual COMPUTER would be fine. But the mini-DVI-to-full-size-DVI adapter wouldn’t. (Although if you’re smart, you’d just use a mini-DVI-to-VGA, bypassing the bad DVI adaptor in the conference room.)

3.) Three, you need barriers to participation. This is one of the things that killed Usenet. You have to have some cost to either join or participate, if not at the lowest level, then at higher levels. There needs to be some kind of segmentation of capabilities.
