The gamers' voice on the backbenches: ePolitix.com | Dec 2009
Extensive interview with Tom Watson MP - a very interesting man, both an IT geek and a democracy geek
-
"My message to them… was transparency and accountability wasn't a goal, it was a process to which we would achieve collaborative democracy using these tools.
-
"This is now Britain's youth and under-30s saying we want a different settlement with copyright, don't mess around with the way we live our lives. I just really hope that the Government and the Tory front bench listen to that.

However, it is not impossible and in fact we have undertaken a couple of such projects where we have utilised Alfresco open source ECM technology, and also engaged with the organisation on an agile basis (one of these based in Birmingham .... kinda ironic).
The trick has been about clear expectation setting up front, and ensuring that all stake holders understand the process and the requirements on them as an organisation.
I have to say though, both of these projects came about following fiasco's with large SI's, that held some kind of blanket contract to deliver all things IT related - including websites, DM systems, collaboration and the like - with subsequent failure to deliver on time, within budget, and to a degree of functional capability that could be considered acceptable.

Woolly and vague UK policy update

But the root cause is the failure of the Government to ensure that the public secures rights to access the source, to fix bugs and to add features to the information systems it buys. So, though moving completely to free and open source software (FOSS) would solve this problem, this isn’t not necessary.

Crass Stupidity » Royal Mail: It’s All About Money
No concern for customer retention - and no flexibility. And 'Large' stamps, for your 6 mm thick mail, are not sold in shops, only at the increasingly rare Post Office counters. Pah!
-
It contains a couple of screws a friend had sent me. I asked why there was insufficient postage on it and was told:
“A lot of people ask that [pause there to see if there's a lesson to be learned by Royal Mail]. It’s because it’s thicker than 5mm…”

Royal Mail - Service Summary for all customers - Saturday 24th October Communication Workers Union national industrial action
-
Add Sticky NoteWe are really sorry for the significant disruption and inconvenience national industrial action being taken by the CWU is having on customers and for the uncertainty further announcements of industrial action will cause.
- Thankfully talks did start again yesterday, and my criticisms are not entirely deserved. - on 2009-10-27
- If they are really sorry, or in any way regret the disruption to customers, then they would enter into unconditional mediation. Perhaps Royal Mail managers think it will be better for their careers to win a fight rather than save the postal service. - on 2009-10-26

Liberal Conspiracy » Conservatives and Libertarians – How do you spot the difference?
A short and sweet summary of the classical enlightenment liberalism that I subscribe to.
-
The essence of political freedom depends not on the fanatics of ‘justice’, but rather on all the invigorating, beneficial, and detergent effects of dissenters
-
the libertarians are the only one out of the political ideologies that believe in private property to regard the graduated income tax as oppression.

Op-Ed Columnist - Two Wrongs Make Another Fiasco - NYTimes.com
Frank Rich's Sunday column is unrestrained in its anger at Afghanistan hawks.
-
We must “win” in Afghanistan — but victory is left vaguely defined. That’s because we will never build a functioning state in a country where there has never been one. Nor can we score a victory against the world’s dispersed, stateless terrorists by getting bogged down in a hellish landscape that contains few of them.
-
What’s more mortifying still is that McCain was just as wrong about Afghanistan and Pakistan. He routinely minimized or dismissed the growing threats in both countries over the past six years, lest they draw American resources away from his pet crusade in Iraq.
Truthdig - This Isn’t Reform, It’s Robbery
It sounds like Democratic voters expected "single payer" (like Medicare) but they are not being offered it.

Yahoo is quite literally trumpeting that they support political discussion in the very message they are sending to close down a political discussion.

Engineering fields where women are less than 20 percent pay more." Arreola says more study is needed to conclusively determine a cause for this pattern, but the implication is chilling: Once women break into a field in noteworthy numbers, its value goes down.
