f-spot - multi-user tips
-
Create a new /usr/bin/f-spot with the following contents:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/f-spot.real -b /vermaat/photos -p /vermaat/photos "${@}"This should sort-of work in a multi-user environment.
[Digikam-users] Digikam in a multi-user network environment

Recently I started using digikam in a networked environment, with multiple users on different computers accessing a central image store on a server.
I have come across some issues

It works... Had to change the link to a symbolic one, since I stored the photos.db file on a NFS share, where the photo files are.

Idea #17056: "Multi-user F-Spot" - Ubuntu brainstorm
Great idea.
-
The concept behind this is not to allow complex file locking, multiple updates or the like. Just the ability to use a multi-user database (MySQL) instead of SQLite.
-
Family PC has several user accounts. One digital camera.
[Foundation-l] [Slashdot] Why the Photos On Wikipedia Are So Bad
-
Most of his picture seems to be just
perfect for use, around the 1-2 Mpixel range which is a good
compromise to make them available for real use while preventing them
to be used in real printed media, which I guess provide Jerry a
living.
Poynter Online - Story Behind the Picture: Who Owns JonBenet Photos?
This rule applies to all kinds of photographs that may otherwise appear to be 'fair use' or 'by permission'
-
The fair use arguments for ignoring ZUMA's assertion of rights to control the image are very weak. Fair use can allow an otherwise infringing use of a photo where it is the photo itself -- not what is depicted in the photo -- that is news. This is not the case here. JonBenet Ramsey is the news, and ZUMA appears to control an image of her that many want to use.

On the Texas suit against Virgin and Creative Commons (Lessig Blog)
CC were sued and later volunatrily dismissed by the Flickr photographer and the girl's parents over the Virgin Mobile ad campaign - CC CEO comments
-
CC licenses have not (yet) tried to deal with the complexity of any right of privacy. The failure of Virgin to get a release before commercially exploiting the photograph thus triggers the question of whether the minor's right to privacy has been violated.
(Free) culture clash
Very interesting debate about the use of Creative Commons images of people in a suggestive ad campaign.
-
Many jurisdictions recognise personality rights, which can protect subjects in this type of situation; in Australia, like in other common law countries, this is done in a particular type of way through passing off, traditionally a tort but which in Australia is fairly robustly protected in trade practices legislation, which allows both for civil suits and intervention by the ACCC.
..."You apparently can use unauthorised images of people to sell products, just make sure they're foreigners photographed overseas!"
My Stream... of Consciousness: Flickr vs. Shutterfly
I want an online backup - so paying $25 now sounds better than paying $100s when the inevitable hard drive failure occurs.
-
Shutterfly holds your photos hostage. If you want to access a high resolution copy of your own photos, you can't just download them. Shutterfly only lets you download low resolution versions. "Oh, your computer crashed, you say? Well, you are welcome to order an archive CD with high resolution versions of all your images for $39.99.*

A VC: Thinking About Online Photo Services
Oh no - not an easy choice then. No cost and private Shutterfly, or cheap powerful but complex Flickr.
-
I use Flickr and think its great flexibility is pretty cool. But much of what I actually do is sharing friends and family photos, and when I do that I get constant complaints about the geeky, incomprehensible interface.
