How to Test Your Hard Drive with Smartmontools
Gentle intro to smartmontools

If there is still reason for worry, and a couple of hours to do something else while the long test runs, then:

There are two rubber "shims" that are glued into the drive bay on the left and right sides of the drive. The glue is pretty bad and the shims can come lose.

Schneier of BT attacks security officials that want to take our privacy, and security devices for computers that allow the software vendor to lock us in to a commercial relationship with them.

Security and privacy are not opposite ends of a seesaw; you don't have to accept less of one to get more of the other. Think of a door lock, a burglar alarm and a tall fence. Think of guns, anti-counterfeiting measures on currency and that dumb liquid ban at airports. Security affects privacy only when it's based on identity, and there are limitations to that sort of approach.
Cool Solutions: Compressed Drive Imaging over a Network
Michael Farrel uses bzip2 rather than dd and gzip. This might be a bit heavy on older processors, but if you have a narrow network pipe, go for it.
-
netcat -l -p 12345 |bzip2 -d | dd of=/dev/hda
The -l switch tells netcat that you are listening for an incoming connection. The -p switch specifies which port you are listening on which is left to your discretion. The network input, when received is then piped into the bzip2 decompressor which in turn sends its data to the dd imaging utility and thus, the hard drive itself. The compression is used to save network bandwidth and is entirely optional. Additionally, you are welcome to use gzip in place of bzip2 if bzip2 is either unavailable or undesired.
A graphical overview of the receive pipeline can be seen on the right.
Setting up the host machine
Now that the destination machine is ready, its time to send the drive over the network to it from the host machine. This is done via the one-liner below
bzip2 -c /dev/sda | netcat 192.168.2.4 12345

On Server B (receiving):
# nc l p 1010 | dd of=/tmp/image.dd
This will now sit and wait for incoming data and write it to the image file.
On Server A, you need to start sending that data:
# dd if=/dev/sda | nc 192.168.0.1 1010

Electrical Specification for MIDI? - Proper Design of Joystick/MIDI Adapters
Refer to this when choosing or building a connector

We were able to locate six different such cables, all of which violate the MIDI hardware specification by grounding both MIDI connectors (MIDI IN and MIDI OUT). ALL of these cables will cause ground loops, and generate hum and other unnecessary noise.

I haven't read this. The date (2004) is a couple of years newer than the 'official' copy at TLDP. It is by the author of DMIDI, Linux software for network transports, but covers the broad spectrum of MIDI on Linux applications.
