'the stealthy decline'

If you feel the need to reject someone, it may be better to let the
invitation expire without action, or even better, just click on the
"Decide Later" button, which will stop LinkedIn nags about the
invitation until it does expire.

I disagree - I just sit at my house and play with openBC and LinkedIn and I haven't been to any networking events yet and I'm doing just fine - in fact, I'm doing great! Of course I'm planning to attend the next event but that's because I already know so many people and have interacted with them so many times that "meeting" them is the next logical step
LinkedIn Tips Page 1 of 3: Get Started Building Your LinkedIn Network

The tips below are written for anyone who would like start building their contact network using LinkedIn. I suggest that each tip be followed in sequential order.

To have any sort of peace in a disparate world, you have to give up a bit of your own identity, a bit of your own approach to situations, and learn how to compromise, how to recognize the needs of others on the planet, to find "the middle way". If you cannot give up your own values, if you cannot but clutch desperately at your national identity and not even imagine change, growth, evolution or compromise, then your imperialistic, ethnocentric rigidity will inevitably prove more of a threat to the rest of the world than any tin-pot dictator who remains in power through intimidation.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH FIRST-GENERATION SOCIAL SOFTWARE - Dave Pollard's salon blog - How to Save the World
These are great ideas, but they are more likely to happen 20 years down the line rather than tomorrow. However it seems like tools like Google, Gmail and Beagle are building the early foundations.
-
And as Stowe said, social software "will become the cornerstone of a revolution in IT", not to mention a revolution in how we connect, network, and organize and share information -- activities that comprise much of the fabric of our lives. We just need to remember: Simple, Personal, Decentralized, Just-in-time.
Virtual Collaboration: If You Can't Work Side-by-Side - Dave Pollard's salon blog
Dave Pollard has an interesting survey of current collaboration software, and suggests that online collaboration is about to become hugely more powerful and practical in the real world.
-
we will soon see:
* A single, free, reliable, easy-to-use, professional-looking application that will provide what I've called Simple Virtual Presence -- the four applications listed above plus the option of videoconferencing (illustrated above), and
* A simple, free, easy-to-use collaboration space where the results of the online collaboration sessions, and a library of relevant resources and links, are stored, with wiki-like capability so it can be maintained by any and all in the group.
Rescuing Social Networking - Dave Pollard's salon blog
Some bizarre daydreaming and largely unfounded criticism of online social networking.
Daydreaming is good, but I don't happen to agree with Dave Pollard today.
-
What would really make SVP cool would be if we could meter it, so that the tool could track time we spent on each call and, with the agreement of the other party, automatically bill them and pay us for our time at an agreed-upon rate. Because it's the value you add person-to-person, helping them in their personal context, once the introductions are over and they know they've found the person they want to 'hire', that could finally realize the promise of online commerce

Konstantin of LinkedIn explains the LI button to use to meet new people.
-
So, when you want to meet new people, please use the contact request system. If you have a win-win proposal and your direct connections are strong, it will almost always get accepted, especially if the person is 2 or 3 degrees away.

Great overview of usability and usefulness of the leading sites.

Membership for new (Ecademy) Marketplace is considered too
expensive for most members. Private Clubs are where the actual
business is done and where the best blogging can be found. (known as
going underground at (Ecademy))

As an alternative, Konstantin has suggested a stealthy decline to
people you don't know yet, by clicking 'Decide Later'. It would
probably be polite and effective to Decide Later and introduce myself
to the member by mail - hoping to create a relationship. What do you
think?

Why LinkedIn don't like The Dark Side.

if people who already are on LinkedIn receive invitations from people who they don’t recognize, it puts them in an awkward position (many people don’t like be in a position where they don’t want to say “yes” and also don’t want to say “no”) and it frequently undermines the trust they have into the utility of LinkedIn (for example, whether or not they can actually reach people who are four degrees away).
Chief Networking Officer / New position into corporate world ? - Ecademy
A variety of opinions on networking in the corporate world.
-
As for the CNO role, it's virtually the same role as I do as Chief Relationship Officer. I keep track of all relationships inside the company and between the company and outside partners/clients etc. Being an unstructured global start-up company it's also my job to make sure that everyone communicates on a regular basis, and to motivate people. It's also natural for me to network and go out and find the contacts we need

get the LinkedIn rankings by searching your network on number of contacts (excludes those not within 4 degrees and not open to direct contact.)

Rather than
see things become more acrimonious, I'd like to suggest that this
message be the last of our collective discussion and that we all write
it off as 'the one that got away.'"
Make sense? Don't blame anyone, and have sincere regret, but don't
accept blame either: it certainly isn't YOUR fault that they can't
have a pleasant chat. :-)

But for me, this tells me that we should keep up a VERY high level of activity and position ourselves to let people come to us when they may, when it's comfortable for them. Almost enough to make one become a "quantity" proponent! :-)
destinationCRM.com: Is Social Networking an Overhyped Fad or a Useful Tool?
LinkedIn success story.

To my surprise 29 of these individuals accepted my request and passed it on to their contacts with a personal note of introduction. What then shocked me was that 23 of those targeted executives (including people in Europe and the Far East) accepted my request, and offered to consider helping with my research effort.
At this point I now had information on how to directly contact these sales execs. In following up with these individuals I was able to convince 18 of them to help me with my project. It equates to a 60 percent hit rate--compared with results from cold calling, this is very impressive.
