Row erupts over schools open-source project - ZDNet.co.uk - June 2008
Sleaze, or clumsy evaluation criteria?
-
Becta said it had received "a strong set of responses from excellent organisations all of whom scored well in different areas". It added: "AlphaPlus came out on top overall but, as stated earlier, we anticipate that the nature of the work will mean that many parties in the education and open-source community will be involved in elements of the project delivery."

Didn't BECTA see that coming?

Funny how the UK Public Sector is the only one in the world who consistently 'trial' Open Source by giving projects to those least capable of delivering them, and then claim that it 'doesn't work' or is 'more expensive than proprietary (equals Microsoft) software'.

I haven't finished reading this fascinating article, which lays aside a lot of my concerns.

Foundation schools have been part of our education for centuries. The term derives from the wishes of the founders, often charitable institutions or church based bodies. A foundation school is part of the state education system and part of the local authority family of schools. It differs in that the land and assets are held by the trust and the governing body is the employer and responsible for student admissions. There are no significant changes in the way the school is funded,

Educating Second Language Children: The Whole Child, the Whole Curriculm, The Whole Community
Book review

It is hard to argue with the instructional approaches suggested throughout the book: literacy-rich environment, meaning-based activities, natural emergence of literacy, lowered anxiety level, motivating activities, and the integration of literacy with content. On the other hand, the book could also create the impression that teaching can be a "one size fits all" approach (Reyes, 1992, p. 427), equally suitable for all children.
Acquiring English as a Second Language - What's "Normal," What's Not
Mentioning bilingualism research studies without citing them! I think they are citing Thomas and Collier (1998), which might be a meta-study, but odd not to cite the studies themselves.

Gradually, as they learned more English, they would be taught in the primary language 50% of the time and in English 50% of the time by sixth grade. Studies have shown that children who are taught in this manner outperform ELLs who are taught mostly in English from very early in their schooling. ...When these standardized tests are administered, the ELLs often score very low and are labeled as having language-learning disabilities. They are then inappropriately placed into special education.

The same story as the Telegraph one, but with a different slant on the background information. This one has anecdotes about how quickly children from non-English-speaking homes learn English.

"The diversity of our community here in Newham is probably one of our greatest strengths. Bilingual children have a good grasp of their mother tongue and learn English very quickly with great support from parents" " Lots of schools in London with 70% or 80% of children with English as a second language are beating the national average."
