The Obama Administration has now actually co-sponsored an anti-free speech resolution at the United Nations. Approved by the U.N. Human Rights Council last Friday, the resolution, cosponsored by the U.S. and Egypt, calls on states to condemn and criminalize “any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.”

growing fear that liberals in Washington were set to re-instate the “Fairness” Doctrine to silence talk radio -- the only media venue not under their complete control -- led grassroots citizens, key members of Congress and organizations like the Media Research Center to take strong and unrelenting action against such a move, forcing the Leftist Washington establishment to back away from it's reinstatement.
However, undaunted in their zeal to silence conservative opposition, liberal leaders in Washington voted on and passed “The Durbin Amendment”, which actually poses a much greater danger to our free speech rights than the “Fairness Doctrine” because it expands the FCC censorship threat in ways never imagined.

emember the “Fairness Doctrine”? It was the FCC mandate that required equal representation of viewpoints on the airwaves in the 1970s and 80s. If a given radio channel aired three hours of conservative talk radio, it had to balance those out with three hours of liberal talk radio. President Ronald Reagan struck this down in 1987 and the popularity that conservative talk radio has garnered since has some members of the House and Senate calling for the doctrine’s reintroduction.
I have only one question: “Would the legislators who are pushing for the reinstitution of the ‘Fairness Doctrine’ be willing to abide by it as well?”

Squealing Muslims Again
The College Republicans at San Francisco State University (SFSU) held an anti-Hamas rally on Wednesday at which at least one group member stepped on a Hamas flag, apparently leading offended students to call for the group's punishment.
No, we haven't accidentally re-posted our "This Month in FIRE History" blog—believe it or not, these events just happened last week! Reaction to the rally has been fast and furious; according to the College Republicans' blog, a coalition of students offended by the rally will shortly be releasing a statement containing the following demands:
* Authorities must drop all charges pending against [the two counter-protestors arrested by police].
* The school must sanction/punish the College Republicans for throwing shoes at the Hamas flag.
* The groups must organize a forum to "educate" students about what forms of speech are not acceptable according to the offended parties, specifically the always ambiguous "hate speech."
While those calling for the College Republicans' punishment may not have learned their lesson, we trust that the SFSU administration has, and that no student will face any disciplinary action—or even investigation—for desecrating a flag in an act of political protest. Nonetheless, you can be sure we will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Additionally Google has emerged as a powerful force for centralization, gobbling up emerging companies such as YouTube and Feedburner, and demonstrating a clear political bias in its dealings. Google's dominance of the search market gives it a great deal of control over what customers can and can't see, and as Google's agreement with the People's Republic of China has demonstrated, Google is willing to censor to accomodate governments.
As Google emerges as a larger player, its lobbying has become more aggressive, and it needs government to promote the policies it favors, while restraining the sort of anti-trust investigations that scuttled the Google-Yahoo ad deal. With Google's notoriously data hungry ways and ultra-liberal politics, it could well serve as a vital ally in any internet censorship scheme.

UPDATE: We have been reminded that Senator Stabenow's husband, Thomas Athans, is the co-founder of the liberal TalkUSA Radio network and is now the Executive Vice-President of liberal Air America. Liberal talk radio has of course failed miserably every time it has been tried, all the while watching it's conservative counterpart's success soar.
Which might lead one to believe that Senator Stabenow, in addition to her zealous will to slam the fist of government down upon her opponents, has some business skin in the game as well. If you can't beat 'em, censor 'em.
