The Obama Administration has now actually co-sponsored an anti-free speech resolution at the United Nations. Approved by the U.N. Human Rights Council last Friday, the resolution, cosponsored by the U.S. and Egypt, calls on states to condemn and criminalize “any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence.”

Additionally Google has emerged as a powerful force for centralization, gobbling up emerging companies such as YouTube and Feedburner, and demonstrating a clear political bias in its dealings. Google's dominance of the search market gives it a great deal of control over what customers can and can't see, and as Google's agreement with the People's Republic of China has demonstrated, Google is willing to censor to accomodate governments.
As Google emerges as a larger player, its lobbying has become more aggressive, and it needs government to promote the policies it favors, while restraining the sort of anti-trust investigations that scuttled the Google-Yahoo ad deal. With Google's notoriously data hungry ways and ultra-liberal politics, it could well serve as a vital ally in any internet censorship scheme.

UPDATE: We have been reminded that Senator Stabenow's husband, Thomas Athans, is the co-founder of the liberal TalkUSA Radio network and is now the Executive Vice-President of liberal Air America. Liberal talk radio has of course failed miserably every time it has been tried, all the while watching it's conservative counterpart's success soar.
Which might lead one to believe that Senator Stabenow, in addition to her zealous will to slam the fist of government down upon her opponents, has some business skin in the game as well. If you can't beat 'em, censor 'em.

Michael Calderone in today's Politico reports on the latest liberal politician -- Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow -- openly touting their intent to silence their talk radio opposition with a reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine.
Superintendent warns against 'inappropriate comments'
Mason school officials said they are taking a proactive educational approach in advance of next week's planned Inauguration Day activities.
"Inappropriate comments that may make other students, staff or families feel unwelcome or uncomfortable in school or on the bus will not be tolerated," Superintendent Kevin Bright said in an e-mail sent to parents Monday, Jan. 12.
The district, he said, expects students and staff to show respect for President-elect Obama and the incoming administration, as well as President Bush and the outgoing administration, and recognize that "while the election is a competitive process, our nation's greatness is displayed when all sides come together for a united country."
Jeff Schlaeger, Mason High School's psychologist, said "inappropriate comments" occurred around election week when doctored pictures of Obama appeared at the school, including "derogatory caricatures" of him dressed like a terrorist and signs that read "Obama '08/Biden '09."

The Censored Journals on Weng’an Riot by a Chinese Journalist
A Chinese journalist wrote a journal richly documenting what he saw and heard in Weng’an County after the riot. The journals were deleted from his blog by China’s Internet censors shortly afterwards, but was somehow recovered by Zola, a citizen journalist who was also reporting in Weng’an.
Two of my previous journals had been deleted by Internet administrators! Silent mourning!
The Party Secretary of Qiannan Prefecture (the upper-level government of Weng’an ) apologized to all people in the area yesterday. He said that although he didn’t shed tears when his mother died, he cried at this incident. I couldn’t figure out why he shed the tears. Did he feel sorry for the damaged government properties? Or did he feel sorry that extensive police power was used to deal with a common incident?
I suddenly heard that a vehicle of Xiaoxiang Morning News (a newspaper based in Hunan Province) was detained by local police when I was filing stories at the press center this morning, because none of the four reporters in the vehicle had driver’s licenses. But I knew that the reporters had arrived in Weng’an a few days ago. Why did the police stop them today?

When API told her that our online news media was only relaying what the American Bloggers and other media outlets had discovered through their investigations, Mrs Obama was angered and she came out loud with the following: "African press International is supposed to support Africans and African-American view," and she went to state that, "it is strange that API has chosen to support the racists against my husband. There is no shame in being adopted by a step father. All dirt has been thrown onto my husband's face and yet he loves this country. This is a very interesting turn of events. The American man Dr Corsi was recently reported to have been arrested in Kenya because there was fear that he might reveal information on Obama when he wanted to hold a press conference in Nairobi.

When asked who she was referring to as the evil people, she stated that she was not going to elaborate much on that but that many conservative white people and even some African Americans were against her husband, but that this group of blacks were simply doing so because of envy.
On Farakhan and his ministry, Mrs Obama told API that it was unfortunate that Mr Farakhan came out the way he did supporting her husband openly before the elections was over. That was not wholehearted support but one that was calculated to convince the American people that my husband will support the growth of muslim faith if he became the president, adding "even if my husband was able to prove that he is not a Muslim, he will not be believed by those who have come out strongly to destroy his chances of being the next President. Do real people expect someone to deny a religion when 80 percent of his relatives are Muslims?; Mrs Obama asked.
Mrs Obama asked API to write a good story about her husband and that will earn API an invitation to the innoguration ceremony when, as she put it , her husband will be installed as the next President of the United States of America next year.

The ad asks Obama when he will apologize for calling the group “liars” for pointing out how he misrepresented his votes in the Illinois legislature against bills that would require medical care for babies who survive failed abortions.

NOT ALL COUNTRIES guarantee their citizens the right to virtually unbridled freedom of speech. The United States does. Would someone please tell the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama? And the dozing guardians of liberty at the University of Mary Washington?
Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, is scheduled to speak at a rally at the university today. The public is invited to this forum, on property it, the public, owns. However, signs and banners will not be allowed, according to the organizers and compliant campus officials. Suddenly, UMW is a First Amendment-Free, or at least a First Amendment-Crippled, Zone, subject to the self-serving preferences of politicos. Why does an Obama rally–or a McCain rally or a Nader rally–justify taking a little off the top of Americans’ most fundamental rights?
A UMW spokeswoman says that the Obama campaign required the sign-and-banner ban. That campaign tells us that the ban is for “security” reasons. But a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting presidential candidates, says that the service has no objection to signs at rallies, provided that no “part of the sign could be used as a weapon”–e.g., a heavy metal pole or a sharpened stick. Finally, the McCain campaign tells us, “We encourage people to make signs at our events.”

Where is Al Gore when you need him? Three years ago, the former vice president blasted "digital brownshirts" who "harass and hector any journalist who is critical of the president." He meant the mortal threat to the Republic of bloggers and angry Republican e-mailers. But times change, and the digital legions are greater nowadays on Mr. Gore's side. Thus we don't hear much fretting at all about the Obama Action Wire, which, unlike the brownshirts of yore, is actually managed by Barack Obama's campaign to muzzle critical media.
Here's how it works. A message goes out over Barack Obama's Web site with the names, phone numbers and e-mails of editors and producers foolish enough to host Obama critics. With Mr. Obama's extensive digital following, and his extensive fund-raising and contact lists, shutting up the Democratic nominee's critics with a fraction of Mr. Obama's millions of supporters is relatively simple. The digital legions plug phone lines, crash servers and intimidate the advertisers of these media outlets. This must be another instance of the "new" politics that Mr. Obama frequently talks about.

Mr. Kurtz is a conservative writer who this week forced the University of Illinois to finally open its records on Sen. Obama’s association with William Ayers, the unrepentant 1970s Weather Underground terrorist.

Why is Obama reacting with such nervousness and such disproportionate anger? Because the truth is so damaging. You can’t hang with an unrepentant terrorist and then want to get elected as commander-in-chief to lead a global war on terror. The average voter won’t swallow that nonsense.

Tonight, WGN radio is giving right-wing hatchet man Stanley Kurtz a forum to air his baseless, fear-mongering terrorist smears. He's currently scheduled to spend a solid two-hour block from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. pushing lies, distortions, and manipulations about Barack and University of Illinois professor William Ayers.
Tell WGN that by providing Kurtz with airtime, they are legitimizing baseless attacks from a smear-merchant and lowering the standards of political discourse.

Sen. Barack Obama has launched an all-out effort to block a Republican billionaire’s efforts to tie him to domestic and foreign terrorists in a wave of negative television ads.
Obama’s campaign has written the Department of Justice demanding a criminal investigation of the “American Issues Project,” the vehicle through which Dallas investor Harold Simmons is financing the advertisements. The Obama campaign — and tens of thousands of supporters — also is pressuring television networks and affiliates to reject the ads. The effort has met with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks.
Obama has also launched his own response ad, directly addressing Simmons' attempt to link him to domestic terror.
The project is “a knowing and willful attempt to violate the strictures of federal election law,” Obama general counsel Bob Bauer wrote to Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Keeney last week in a letter provided to Politico. Bauer argued that by advocating Obama’s defeat, the ad should be subject to the contribution limits of federal campaign law, not the anything-goes regime of issue advocacy.

The director of Moscow's Sakharov Museum and Public Center, Yuri Samodurov, faces up to three years imprisonment in a penal colony on charges of "inciting religious hatred" and offending Orthodox believers. Also charged and facing imprisonment, are the museum's curator, Ludmila Vasilovskaya and artist Anna Mikhalchuk. The prosecution has also requested the court to issue bans on Samodurov and Vasilovskaya holding office in organizations and to order the destruction of all of the works of art shown in the exhibition. A verdict is expected on March 28 in Moscow's Taganskaya District Court.
The charges were brought after a group of young men attacked the museum's "Caution! Religion" exhibit in January 2003, destroying art works and painting slogans. A Moscow court declined to proceed with charges of "hooliganism" brought against the attackers-on the grounds that the exhibition had provoked their actions. In December 2003, Samodurov, Vasilovskaya, and Mikhalchuk were indicted as the principal organizers of an exhibition described as "insulting and offensive to Christianity in general and to Orthodox Christianity and the Russian Orthodox Church in particular."

The January 18 attack on the "Caution! Religion" exhibition was attributed to a group of young acolytes from the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in Pyzhi. In a letter to President Vladimir Putin of February 2, 2003, the Public Committee for the Moral Revival of the Fatherland, chaired by Alexander Shargunov, archpriest of St. Nicholas in Pyzhi, placed the attack on the Sakharov Center in a framework of both religion and extreme nationalist politics. Samodurov's crime, by this account, was both having hosted the "Caution! Religion" exhibition and "anti-social activity," including having provided a forum critical of the war in Chechnya. In calling for Putin to close the center, it said:
"For the entire period of its existence the [Sakharov] Center has promoted anti-social values and defended bandits and criminals, especially Chechens. The Center's activities are clearly aimed at corrupting the morals of Russian society and the Russian army. They cunningly use the slogan "Stop the War in Chechnya" for this purpose. The very peak of the Center's anti-social activity was the blasphemous exhibition "Caution! Religion." In our view, it was not accidental that marginal "politicians" offered their Museum's exhibition hall to marginal "artists."

_ A Belgrade publisher is to withdraw from bookstores a novel that the Islamic Community in Serbia has described as offensive to Muslims.
Aleksandar Jasic, the director of the Beobuk publishing house also apologised to Muslims for distributing the book entitled The Jewel of Medina by Sherry Jones, which details the life of Ajsa, “one of Prophet Mohammad’s wives,” who he married when she was 11.
The decision followed a strong protest by the leader of the Islamic Community in Serbia, Muarem Zukorlic who compared the book with the Mohammed cartoons controversy of 2006.
Those cartoons, some of which depicted the Prophet, were published in a Danish newspaper and then republished in several other western European countries, triggering a series of protests by Muslims around the world.
Islam forbids any physical depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.
"It is a book that absolutely does not refraining from desecrating something that is considered by all Muslims as untouchable,” Zukorlic said.
