How to Save the World
-
I
enjoy reading Dave Weinberger's Joho the Blog for two reasons: because
he's an incredibly bright guy, and because he gets you thinking about
things you don't ordinarily get around to thinking about (due to a
combination of lack of imagination and lack of time). I don't have time to think, I'm too busy
blogging. If that's your problem, Dave's the cure for what ails
ya.
I've talked on these pages before about the limitations of blogs: Their
inaccessibility to the technologically inept, the immense difficulty of
building an audience (and even finding others to 'talk with') when
you're a newcomer to blogging and hence subject to Shirky's Power Law
(first one in gets all the attention).

Battle for the Future of the Net
-
At stake is nothing less than the future of the Net. Developed in part by Berners-Lee, who is now based at MIT, the Semantic Web goes well beyond today's relatively static information highway to add richer media and support for vast pools of unstructured data—in effect, making all the world's knowledge available online. It also connects the information in ways that will let users discover novel associations among unrelated data. That has big implications for fields ranging from the military to medical research to business intelligence (see BusinessWeek.com, 4/9/07, "Taming the World Wide Web").
European engineers, working with researchers from the U.S. and elsewhere, already have played a big role in the development of basic Web 3.0 standards. Now, governments are raising the stakes to keep Europe at the forefront. "They want to create the defining technologies for the Semantic Web and give European companies an advantage in the market," says Mark Greaves, a scientist with Seattle's Vulcan, the asset management company started by Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen. "If you are looking to fund revolutionary technology with commercial importance then you have to put your money where your mouth is," says Greaves, who heads Vulcan's Semantic Web research program.
Audio and the User Experience :: UXmatters
-
When designers and developers create user experiences—be they for Web applications, desktop applications, or digital devices—audio is often a missing ingredient.
-
In fact, advances in voice recognition and voice interfaces for phone support systems are making it increasingly likely that you’ll talk to a computer when you dial a customer service line. But despite these robust applications, the integration of audio into graphic user interfaces is still a rarity.
Sphere Quietly Nailing Its Business Model
-
Instead of focusing on building a better blog search engine (an area that Google now dominates after a recent Technorati refocus), Sphere has spent its time developing technology that automatically finds blog posts related to whatever a user is looking at currently. The product, called SphereIt, has been added to around 20,000 blogs (including TechCrunch, see the end of any blog post) and gives users additional reading material on the topic of the article or post. It is one of the top 50 plugins for Wordpress-based blogs.
