The Spectator

  • But John McCain is a Republican who does not fit the old template, who does subscribe to some of this ‘change’ agenda on a number of issues. As a result, he was incapable of attacking Obama on the most important grounds of all: that he stood for values inimical to America’s founding principles. When he did venture into this territory, it was half-cocked and far too late, appearing merely like the desperate throw of a loser. The reason he couldn’t do it earlier was that he had no coherent platform of his own. So why vote for a muddled and erratic quasi-'progressive' when the real thing is a rock star? It cannot be said too emphatically -- the Republicans lost this election. Obama ran a superbly disciplined campaign and he was an impressive candidate, particularly in his calm and stately demeanour throughout. The Republicans screwed up in government, they selected a hopelessly frail and erratic candidate, he ran a shambolic campaign. They deserved to lose.
  • Millions of Americans remain lion-hearted, decent, rational and sturdy. They find themselves today abandoned, horrified, deeply apprehensive for the future of their country and the free world. No longer the land of the free and the home of the brave; they must now look elsewhere.

Lewis, A Lazy Media, And Their Race Cards | Black & Right

The only question I have for Congressman John Lewis is, "What took you so long?" The McCain campaign was apparently caught off guard by the the race card salvo, while many of us knew this day would officially come.

Anger Is Crowd's Overarching Emotion at McCain Rally

The crowd showed equal disdain for the media, fueled by comments from Palin, who encouraged the Republican supporters to take the campaign's message around the media. "I can't pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel," she said. "It's dangerous territory whenever I suggest the mainstream media isn't asking all the questions."

Grief in Brief: Finding the Cost of Freedom

t is a rare occurrence indeed when the confluence of events is such that reason itself is cast aside by men so far as to allow evil to take over everyday life with little interference. Righteousness is called prejudice, courage becomes fear-mongering, morality disappears from the lexicon. The laws of entropy cannot be overcome, but can be resisted, but only until the will to do so is exhausted.

There is a hole in the ground in Manhattan at 250 Greenwich St. that remains unrepaired, unreclaimed, that does not look much different than it did shortly after September 11, 2001, over seven years past. Too many Americans looked at the towers tumbling toward Earth and asked what we as a country could possibly have done to provoke such an attack. Not once did they consider this to be an inappropriate response. Yes, there were some, like Pat Tillman, who heard the call to arms, not a call for surrender and appeasement. They were, and are, too few.

Pat Dollard | Young Americans | Blog Archive » ‘Morning After’ Bitter Pill: The Community Organizer Doesn’t Get It Done For The Dem ‘Bail Out’ Plan

One of the key tactics in ‘playing politics’ is to accuse the other side of ‘playing politics’ while your side does it in your face.

Let’s recall back over a week ago when this shit hit the fan Sen. Pinky Reid threw up his hands and said he didn’t know what to do and was bugging out of town.

Now Reid, Schumer and other democrats are demanding Bush run McCain out of town … He’s a fucking Senator, for cripe sakes! He’s doing HIS elected job!

The lie here is “there was a DEAL” … No … there wasn’t.

Did the democrats in the Congress REALLY believe the republicans would be such push-overs for this nationalization veiled as a bail out? And did they REALLY think the GOP wouldn’t have their own plan hot and heavy in the works? Another asinine example of the arrogance of democrats in misunderestimating republicans.

Hot Air » Blog Archive » McCain’s attempt to fix Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac in 2005; Update: Obama can’t get AIG right

With the long-term future of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac likely in the hands of the next president, both presidential candidates embraced Treasury’s short-term measures to rescue the companies as a necessary step but criticized the need for government intervention.

“We need to keep people in their homes, but we can’t allow this to turn into a bailout of Wall Street speculators,” Sen. John McCain said Saturday at a rally in Albuquerque, N.M. The Republican nominee has told voters anxious over job losses and foreclosures that he wouldn’t allow the companies to fail.

Sen. Barack Obama said in an interview aired Sunday that intervention was necessary to “prevent a long-term, much bigger crisis.”

Republicans have long pushed for a structural overhaul of Fannie and Freddie. By contrast, Democrats have warned against making major changes until the companies were stabilized. The companies have traditionally had stronger backing from Democrats, who support their mission of bolstering affordable housing and for years have fended off calls for greater oversight.

Democrats received 56% of some $1.6 million in contributions from the two companies in the current election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Sen. Obama has received $105,849 from donors tied to the companies since he ran for the senate four years ago, making him the third-largest recipient in Congress among the top 25 listed in a recent report by the Center for Responsive Politics, which examined contributions dating to 1989.

Sen. McCain wasn’t listed in the report, and proponents of overhaul say lobbyists have tried unsuccessfully to win him over.

“There were quite a few lobbyists retained by Fannie and Freddie who tried to influence Sen. McCain, but they never were able to get their hooks into him,” said Anne Canfield, who heads the Consumer Mortgage Coalition, a lending trade group that has advocated for overhaul of the government-sponsored enterprises.

Sen. McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, told voters at a Colorado Sp

GovTrack: Senate Record: FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM... (109-s20060525-16)

Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae's regulator reported that the company's quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were "illusions deliberately and systematically created" by the company's senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's former chief executive officer, OFHEO's report shows that over half of Mr. Raines' compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.

The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator's examination of the company's accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac--known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs--and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO's report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO's report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

John McCain Hits Obama Where it Hurts: His Connections to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (Wizbang)

Senator Obama has never made the kind tough reform we need today. His idea of reform is what his party leaders in Congress order him to do. We tried for bipartisan ethics reform and he walked away from it because his bosses didn't want real change. I know how to make the change that Senator Obama and this Congress is afraid of. I've fought both parties to shake up up Washington and I'm going to do it as President.

Those same Congressional leaders who give Senator Obama his marching orders are now saying that this mess isn't their fault and they aren't going to take any action on this crisis until after the election. Senator Obama's own advisers are saying that crisis will benefit him politically. My friends, that is the kind of me-first, country-second politics that are broken in Washington. My opponent sees an economic crisis as a political opportunity instead of a time to lead. Senator Obama isn't change, he's part of the problem with Washington.

The Corner on National Review Online

McCain Responds to Obama's Reported Undermining of the Commander-In-Chief During Wartime [Andy McCarthy]

The McCain Campaign has issued a statement responding to the report from Amer Taheri (see today's web briefing) that Sen. Obama secretly negotiated with the Iraqi government regarding U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. McCain spokesman Randy Scheunemann stated as follows:

At this point, it is not yet clear what official American negotiations Senator Obama tried to undermine with Iraqi leaders, but the possibility of such actions is unprecedented. It should be concerning to all that he reportedly urged that the democratically-elected Iraqi government listen to him rather than the US administration in power. If news reports are accurate, this is an egregious act of political interference by a presidential candidate seeking political advantage overseas. Senator Obama needs to reveal what he said to Iraq's Foreign Minister during their closed door meeting. The charge that he sought to delay the withdrawal of Americans from Iraq raises serious questions about Senator Obama's judgment and it demands an explanation.

Obama Ridicules McCain for War Injuries (13Sep08)

The new Obama Ad aired yesterday makes fun of John McCain's inability to email.

This is, so far, the cruelest and most insensitive Obama Attack on John McCain.

Of course he does not do email. His hands were crushed by his Hanoi captors.

For Obama to allow this kind of abuse of a national hero - this alone - proves that Obama is unfit to be president and commander in chief.

Franklin Roosevelt was never accused of not being able to walk while he worked tirelessly to insure that the government did all it could to win World War II.

Report: McCain a ‘Hero’ to Taxpayers - America’s Election HQ

John McCain is a “hero” to U.S. taxpayers for his lifetime record of resisting earmarks, while Barack Obama and Joe Biden are “hostile” and “unfriendly,” a government spending watchdog group has concluded.

In its new report, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste gave the Republican presidential nominee a 100 percent rating for his votes in the Senate last year, and a lifetime score of 88 percent.

By comparison, the nonpartisan, nonprofit group, which is the lobbying arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, gave the Democratic presidential nominee a 10 percent score last year and a lifetime score of 18 percent. Biden, Obama’s running mate, scored 0 percent last year and an overall score of 22 percent.

Higher scores mean stronger resistance to federal earmarks. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, was not included because the ratings only evaluate members of Congress.

LaRouche's Assessment: There Is Virtually No Candidate for the U.S. Presidency

The hollowest of the platitudes are come from the mouth of the Buppies-and-Boomers favorite, Presidential candidate Obama.... Senator John McCain is no rival of Obama in the pure 'b.s.' department, but John seems to plod along successfully in the shadow of the political con-man act played by thuggish George Soros' patsy, four-flushing Senator Obama. To be fair to both, it must be said that neither campaign has been playing with a full deck, so far....

The danger to our republic, and to you personally, comes from the British Empire whose representatives include George Soros, and, in effect, Felix Rohatyn. Agents of the British Empire's official institutions, such as Soros, are presently in top-down control of the Democratic Party machine. You have seen the near thermonuclear confrontation which the British staged in Georgia. The control from London-centered interests, is virtually treasonous in its effects on our nation, and on you. The Republican side is better only in the degree that it is not the howling Howard Dean's Soros circus.

Today's McCain-Palin Rally in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

  • When Governor Palin stepped to the microphone, the entire arena erupted in thunderous applause and deafening cheers. Thousands of camera flashes seemed to go off simultaneously. And Sarah Palin was forced, by virtue of her audience, to stand silently at the microphone for a good five minutes before she began speaking – so warm and sincere was the enthusiasm expressed by those who came to hear her.
  • By far, the greatest reaction of the afternoon occurred shortly after Senator McCain stepped up to the microphone and said, ‘I am privileged to have been introduced to you by Sarah Palin. But I am looking forward even more to introducing Sarah Palin to Washington D.C.

… at which point seven thousand south-central Pennsylvanians lost their composure, and the cheers and applause were (literally) deafening. Once the din subsided, a powerful chant of ‘Sa-rah! Sa-rah! Sa-rah!’ filled the hall. And John McCain had to stand silently while the enthusiastic support being shown his running mate ran its course.
