Interesting collection of tips, suggestions and techniques. I'm a bit bothered that some of the ideas appear to be completely untested - where's the before and after comparison of improved usability/user experience? It's not just about the look, folks.
A marketplace for brand work - not necessarily open innovation/crowdsourcing ala 99designs, but if the end result gets you what you want, does it matter?
Nice collection of mobile-related books - covering design, strategy, best/worst practices, iPhone-specific, general tips for mobile, etc.
Nice set of Persona and general UX templates for OmniGraffle.
Impressive collection of presentations from Luke. Caught the 90 minute edition of his Mobile First presentation at User Interface 15 in Boston. Absolutely agree with his approach. Mobile first helps to undo some of the damage that infinite screenspace on the desktop has done to UI/UX.
Always interested in expanding the Information Architecture toolkit - this is on the list to test in early 2011.
"iMockups for iPad is a mobile wireframing and mockup app for your web, iPhone and iPad projects.
The ease and mobility of an iPad app with the power of a desktop app at your fingertips."
Interesting to see a lot of work going on in both academic and commercial settings around designing engaging, influential and/or persuasive experiences.
This project is a PhD endeavor - with cards and a supporting wiki for details.
Why re-invent? Examine a collection of existing design patterns that others have already winnowed, and steal, er, learn from working models.
Amazon reviews mark this as well worth it. Definitely relates to a very complex project we're working on that needs a whole lot of re-thinking towards simplicity. Have not yet read the PDF. Full version available here, free. Book is out of print.
"High-tech products have historically had notoriously poor design. Fortunately, companies have recently started to embrace user-centered design practices. This transition hasn't been smooth; many companies have difficulty transferring good design into final, shippable product. There is a political/cultural disconnect between the outward corporate desire for good design and the internal corporate culture that implements it. The Simplicity Shift is about moving the company culture to value, discover and implement simplicity, and to create a well-designed product.
This is the entire book as a large PDF (approximately 2MB), it was published 2002 by Cambridge University Press but is no longer in print."
Interestng walkthru on various design patterns for the UI of portals.
Flash-less, web-based application for wireframes. More options than ever in this space. Getting Enterprise designers/developers to actually use them? Priceless. (But be prepared to defend against "let's just build the full working site/app - that's the 'real test'" discussion...)
Relates to previous bookmark - game design focuses on the player (or players) first - yet most enteprise systems focus on the enterprise (only) and not the players/users/employees, UNLESS it's customer-facing, and arguably, even then, most organizations handle "customer-centricity" badly. What can we learn AND APPLY for Enterprise systems?
"What if there were no stop signs, and a major corporation was charged with inventing one? They'd brief their agency and let them do it. Sorta. Welcome to corporate creativity, where groupthink and endless revisions help good ideas get executed."
Physical materials have been rapidly reinvented and rethought in the last year. Companies are getting smarter about the consumption of energy/materials, being able to repurpose what would have been thought of as waste as a source of energy/resources, etc..
"Behind every classic of design lies some innovation in materials or fabrication. So what materials will tomorrow's brilliant new products be made from? Material Connexion, a materials library for designers, has just unveiled its inaugural MEDIUM awards, for the best materials of the year. The grand-prize winner and the 11 honorable mentions will then be shown in January at the Material Connexion showroom in New York. Here's an exclusive sneak peek of a few of those mind-bending innovations."
Wow - quite the collection for those looking to improve their presentations, information design, branding, and on and on.
"Let’s face it: the majority of presentations given today, whether in business, government or academia, leave audiences cold, if not asleep. It doesn’t have to be that way."
Very interesting - Silverlight-based interface to explore various UX patterns, such as Inline validation (with 6 examples). It's really driving me crazy that more sites don't provide instant, inline validation, among other things. How about auto-lookup of city, state based on the zip code and country? (sigh) Nice collection. Well worth some exploration
Interesting hosted collaboration solution, used primarily for rapid feedback on "designer-oriented" content, such as logos, web designs, etc.. Upload comment you'd like feedback on, invite those you want feedback from, they mark it up (overlay) and/or com
Image-editing via SaaS. Exploring the full possibilities of going "all in" for SaaS, hosted, or cloud options. Found this to be a bit buggy, but then again, I have 70 tabs open in Firefox.
Stumbled onto this solution today - so much of collaboration is about providing a generic "knowledge worker" environment, but there can easily be a need for a more specialized environement. ProtoShare is a website wireframing and prototyping tool, wrapped
Huge collection of video for the presentations given at the Interaction 08 conference this year. Was looking for slide decks for some reference points, but full video is a nice surprise.
