5 Simple Ways to Open Your Blog Post With a Bang | Copyblogger

  • 1. Ask a Question

Opening your post with a question is a rhetorical device (hence, the “rhetorical question”) that creates curiosity and gets the reader thinking. Thinking equals active engagement with your writing, and that’s a very good thing.

  • 2. Share an Anecdote or Quote

Anecdotes are quick stories that can make people laugh or immediately establish the main point of your post. A nice quote from a recognizable authority or famous person can also work wonders when holding attention in those crucial opening seconds.

10 Effective Ways to Get More Blog Subscribers | Copyblogger

  • 1. Make it easy and obvious

As I’ve said before in more detail, make your subscription options prominent, offer an email alternative to RSS, and ask for the subscription, preferably at the bottom of each post.

    2. Be laser focused

Make sure that you are primarily focusing on a particular topic, and the more specialized that topic is, the better you’ll do. It’s also key to step back and evaluate whether there are enough prospective readers in your chosen niche. It’s better to be brutally honest with yourself than to toil away and end up disappointed.

    3. Offer a bribe

Relax, it’s nothing illegal. It’s an ethical bribe, in the form of a free ebook, report, e-course or audio series. Typically this only works with email subscriptions tied to autoresponders, because you want to condition delivery of the bonus on subscription.

But here’s a nifty way to do it with RSS:

If you have a WordPress blog, use the free Feedvertising plugin to link to the download page for your free gift. Since Feedvertising links only show up in the feed (and not in the post), only feed subscribers will see the link and have access to the bonus.

    4. Use viral ebooks

This is a spin on the ethical bribe strategy, but instead you let other people give away your PDF ebook or even bundle it for sale with other products. The PDF in turn promotes your blog. Check out this post to see how I bundled my free Viral Copy report with a book that spent several days at the top of the Amazon bestseller list.

    5. Dedicated subscription landing page

Create a page that is dedicated to nothing more than obtaining a subscription, and drive traffic to it from your blog, AdWords, or really any other source you want. You can even put it on a unique URL, and add in the ethical bribe strategy to increase signups. For more information on doing this with AdWords, read this article, and then this one.

    6. Become a guest blogger

Contributing content to someone else’s blog may seem crazy, but it’s a solid strategy to gain exposure for your own blog and build your subscriber base. Just make it very clear to the blog owner that you require a very brief byline at the end of the post, with a link back to your site. And make sure it’s original content, not something recycled off of your blog.

    7. Start a podcast

Start a related podcast on your subject matter, and get it into iTunes and listed in the various podcasting directories. Mention your blog in every episode and the benefits of subscribing, and try to land some interviews with prominent players in your niche. Not only will you be opening up a new promotional channel, you’re also creating bonus content that can be reused as part of your ethical bribe campaign for new subscribers.

    8. Post in forums

A tried and true technique since the earliest days of the Internet is to be a helpful, proactive participant in forums that are important in your niche. People will notice that you are offering yourself up to others, and will be more inclined to see what else you have to offer with your blog.

    9. Networking

This is perhaps the most overlooked strategy for gaining traffic and subscribers. Don’t badger other bloggers for links, because it rarely works anymore. Find a way to help them with something, and then eventually work that initial graciousness into a business relationship and even friendship. There are real people behind these blogs, and they respond to good will just like people do offline.

    10. Cross-promotional deals

Here’s another cool way to make use of the Feedvertising plugin for WordPress.

Find a blogger that publishes related, but non-competitive content. Work out a deal where you both promote each other in your RSS feeds, using Feedvertising. If one blog has way more subscribers than the other, work out a ratio deal. Since Feedvertising allows you to create up to six rotating links, the smaller blog would promote the other blog continuously, while the larger blog would reserve one slot for the smaller blog, and use the other slots for other cross-promotion deals, affiliate links, or sponsor ads.

So there you have it, with one additional word of caution.

All of the above presupposes that you are producing the best content you can. If you honestly cannot say that you are doing your best work content-wise, start there. But afterwards, using some or all of the above will definitely increase your subscriber count.

P.S. This is where I ask you to sign up for free Copyblogger updates via RSS or email. :)

101 Link Building Tips to Market Your Website : SEO Book.com

  • Love for Lists

    1. Build a "101 list". These get Dugg all the time, and often become "authority documents". People can't resist linking to these (hint, hint).

    2. Create 10 easy tips to help you [insert topic here] articles. Again, these are exceptionally easy to link to.

    3. Create extensive resource lists for a specific topic (see Mr Ploppy for inspiration).

    4. Create a list of the top 10 myths for a specific category.

    5. Create a list of gurus/experts. If you impress the people listed well enough, or find a way to make your project look somewhat official, the gurus may end up linking to your site or saying thanks. (Sometimes flattery is the easiest way to strike up a good relationship with an "authority".)

  • 8. Have an easily accessible privacy policy and about section so your site seems more trustworthy. Including a picture of yourself may also help build your authority.

BLOGGING | Blog Your Way to the Top

  • Blogging Adds Fresh Content to Static Sites

One of the biggest challenges to optimizing a small Web site (20 or fewer pages) is the number of pages available to draw in the reader. While this concept can definitely be taken to the opposite extreme and become a disadvantage - check out what John Scott had to say about excess pages. A daily or weekly dose of fresh content on relevant and current industry topics is healthy for your Web site. The 90’s saw thousands of sites launched overnight for the simple purpose of presenting what was essentially a Web site business card. Sales associates around the country wanted something, anything, to point prospective clients to online which might lend some authority or credence to their company’s claims.

As long as these executives are satisfied with an online business card format, that’s exactly what they’ll get. Sure, they can optimize their 10-20 pages, and they might even receive some traffic through major search engines. Our goal, however, is to discuss best practices, which entails utilizing and maximizing every tool at your disposal. And since blog software is easy to install on your server and design costs are typically reasonable, all that remains is assigning or hiring someone to add content.

  • Blogs Are Excellent CRM Tools

Matt Cutts’ Blog is an excellent example of how a blog can be a powerful tool for customer relationship marketing (CRM) and online reputation management (ORM). It also represents an important choice your company must make when approaching the subject of blog creation: do you want your blog to be attached to your corporate website, or a separate entity? Most companies wouldn’t consider the separate entity approach for fear of losing control, but there are some major benefits worth considering as well, which we’ll cover in depth in another article.

One of the biggest corporate dilemmas with online media is how to best interact and engage the customer and prospective customer. With millions of blogs and forums circulating the Web, your brand will inevitably receive mention, both positive and negative. Companies in the know are hosting blogs for the very purpose of giving their customers a voice to the company.

If you can encourage your client base to address you personally, you can control the flow of negative press and address issues quickly to transform dissatisfied customers into brand evangelists. Want to distinguish your brand in the industry? Position yourself to be the brand most involved in dialogue and responding to customer comments. Encourage your readers to praise, complain, suggest, and discuss in a venue you can easily control and monitor. This will save potential millions in lost revenue from dissatisfied customers who make it their mission in life to turn others away.

SEO | KEYWORDS | Five Fundamental Questions of Keyword Research

    • Keyword research and analysis are fundamental areas of SEO. From the viewpoint of your Web site, ask yourself the following questions.

      1. What do I want to be known for?
      2. What information, products, and services do I offer?
      3. What keywords are my top ten competitors using?
      4. What keyword phrases are people actually using when they search?
      5. What types of actions are taken by people searching for each phrase?
  • What do I want to be known for?

You need to have this settled from the beginning. Waffling back and forth between branding concepts won’t help you rank for important keywords.

SEO | OPTIMIZE | 7 Questions for Conducting an SEO Site Review

    • What do I need to consider when evaluating my site?

Conducting a site review takes time, and the seven questions that follow can help you cover all the bases.

      1. Look at structure. Is your Information Architecture structured in such a way as to put relevant informational pages within the same category/bucket? This is most commonly called theme-based structure. Do you have enough pages of relevant copy within the site? I’ve mentioned it before, but a 20 page Web site in a competitive vertical is going to be difficult to be successful with, so you should consider adding a blog or otherwise develop good content within the site.
      2. Look at URL propagation. Are your URLs optimized? www.domain.com/page-name is the best way to structure your pages. (But before you go and change all your URLs, speak with a professional first.) If you are rewriting your URLs, be sure that you are putting into place the proper redirects (probably best to put 301 redirects into place). Some search engines do better than others at following redirects, so as mentioned, consult with a professional before you do anything drastic.
      3. Look at design and functionality. Is your site user-friendly? While this isn’t strictly SEO-related, it is absolutely necessary for customer conversion, brand reputation, and customer retention. Are your callouts located above the fold? Are they easily discernible? Is your contact form or shopping cart easy to use?
      4. Look at the code. Is your site W3C compliant? Is it Section 508 compliant? W3C compliance entails clean code without errors. Section 508 compliance involves enabling your site to be readable and usable by users with various disabilities.
      5. Look at your Meta tags. Do each page’s Meta tags accurately reflect the content of the page? Are the keywords employed popularly searched for what you offer? Remember, the Meta keywords tag is not the all-powerful “optimization” platform that it might have been in the year 2000. Title tag, then Description, and then Meta keywords is the proper way to think of these, in terms of valuation and importance.
      6. Look at your content. Do your H1 and other headers reflect each page’s keywords? Do you even have H1 headers? You should. Headers, Content, and Meta tags should all adhere to a keyword theme on each page.
      7. Look at interior linking. Are you using keyword-rich anchor text to link to pages devoted to the keywords used in your links? Are your most important pages receiving link love from the rest of the site?

SEO | OPTIMIZE | Creating Synergy in Your SEO Efforts

  • Title Tag

The bar at the top of your browser that not many “typical” users of the Web even know exists happens to be the single most important component to search engine optimization. Most sites that you come across will say “Company Name – Home” in this area. That’s terrific, if you are very well branded and only want to be found for your company’s name. In that instance, visitors would find your site anyway — if they were searching for your company.

Instead, put your most important keywords in this area, and keep this under control (try to keep the total character length to less than 68 characters, including spaces). For the purpose of this article, let’s make up a page. Let’s say this is a Web site that sells sporting goods, and we’re going to focus specifically on the soccer jersey page. So, we have www.yoursite.com/soccer-jersey/. Your title tag is “Soccer Jersey | Team Uniforms | Soccer Jerseys.” The total character length is 46. That’s pretty short, but it’s concise, and it’s all the keywords I want to focus on for this page.

  • URL

We are seeing that Google is beginning to pay a little more attention to keywords in the URL, so if you don’t already have rankings, if your site is new, or if you are redesigning your site and will be creating new URLs anyway, consider adding some keyword here. Using our example, the best choice is www.yoursite.com/soccer-jersey/.

SEO | OPTIMIZE | SITEMAPS SearchEngineWatch: The Site Map: Gateway to Optimization

  • A Sitemap Helps Users and Spiders

Links from other Web sites and existing search engine rankings will send visitors to various internal pages. The obvious solution to this problem is to include a site map link within the footer of every page. This allows easy access for all to find everything your site has to offer.

That is, of course, assuming that your site map actually does provide easy access to all pages. It’s easy for errors of omission to go unnoticed for the life of a Web site if you don’t have a professional search marketer on your side. Prior to site launch, review all pages on your Information Architecture and ensure that each of these is represented on your site map.

Also, task yourself with a monthly reminder to reevaluate your site map. Keep track of every page you have added to your site that month, and revise your site map to include links to each of these new pages. One of the easiest mistakes to make is to forget to update the site map after adding new content.

  • Categorized Site Map: Depending on the number of pages your site contains, you might consider breaking it up into multiple pages. Our team has one client that is essentially an online directory for local business search. Its one thousand plus unique pages called for a slightly different approach.

This approach is based on experience and tips from the Google experts who told us that beyond 100-150 links, a search engine spider won’t likely follow more. This means a site map of 2,000 links could be largely useless except to any user willing to scroll through endless lines of links. In this instance, we recommended a category breakdown, essentially asking the client to turn the primary site map page into a dmoz home page, with links to main page categories only.

A great example of a categorized site map is the one used by TripAdvisor. I referenced this at Search Engine Strategies Travel Edition in Seattle recently. This site has done a wonderful job of getting many, many pages indexed (approximately 1.8 Million, according to Yahoo!), and you’ll notice that many of its internal pages rank well.

Some experts out there may disagree and insist on always providing all links to all pages on one site map page regardless of site size, and that’s okay. This is one of those gray areas where you have to test your theories and stick with what works for you.

Motivations for Linkbaiting - Why Links are Good for Your Blog

    • A. Direct and immediate Traffic

The most immediate benefit of an incoming link is the direct traffic that that link can bring you. This initial rush of traffic in turn leads to a variety of other benefits depending upon the blog including:

      • increased earnings (if you have a commercial blog)
      • new subscribers (to RSS feeds and/or newsletters)
      • new loyal readers (others will bookmark you and become regular readers)
      • secondary traffic (often after you get a link from one site you’ll notice a secondary round of links from others who came from the first links and have their own sites. They in turn send traffic and so it goes on)

This initial direct incoming trafffic is also an opportunity to win new loyal readers for your site (we’ll cover how to do this later in the series).

  • B. Search Engine Juice

A longer term benefit of an incoming link (after the initial ‘rush’ of incoming traffic) is that the links gained will help to grow your search engine ranking (often referred to as Google Juice).

While there are many factors that search engines use to determine how they will rank a web page - one of the most powerful elements is how many links point to it. Search Engines treat incoming links to your site like votes - (I’m over simplifying here) the more votes you get the more they’ll see others as valuing your page.

While there are also many other factors at play (including the ranking of the site linking to you, the words that they use and many more elements (more on SEO here) the number of links you get is a factor also.

Of course the higher your individual pages (and whole blog) rank the more ongoing traffic you’ll have.

Most linkbaiting techniques are particularly good for SEO (search engine optimisation) because the links are non reciprocal (ie they are one way, something else SE’s like) and they are generally incoming links with good anchor text (ie the words used to link to you are usually keywords relevant to your page - we’ll cover how to improve the chances of this in our tips section later).

SEO | LINK BUILDING | LINK BAIT -> 20 Linkbaiting Techniques

  • Tools - give other website owners a useful, fun or cool tool that they can use on their blog that points back to your own. A prime example of this was the blog worth tool that Dane from Business Opportunities developed that tells how much a blog is worth based on Technorati’s API (used by thousands of bloggers (google shows 27,000+ links pointing to it) - most of whom posted the button that the tool provides (with a link back to his blog).
  • Quizzes - quizzes, surveys and tests have long been popular with web users and if you’re smart about the way you design them (giving people a button to place on their site for example) they can be quite viral. I ran my recent ProBlogger quiz as a quick test of a plugin and saw it bring in quite a few links - if I’d given participants a button and given it some more thought it would have been even more successful).

SEO | LINK BUILDING | LINK BAIT ->5 Characteristics of successful Linkbait

  • 1. A killer headline

A headline is not 50% of the equation. It’s 100% of the first step in the equation, the second being the content that the user consumes. Not getting past the first step means the second step is wasted.

  • 2. Emotional response.

Actions are based on emotion, not rational thought, although some people like to think that. The act of linking to someone requires emotional stimulas. People need a reason, the reason does not have to be rational and the linker does not even have to aware of why they are linking as calling to their sub-conscious is a lot more effective than persuading their conscious.

SEO | OPTIMIZE | Is Your Website Search Engine Friendly? Your Personal Checklist

  • 1. FRAMES

Lets start with this oldie. Luckily, frames are becoming a way of the past what with the use of DIV layers and the slow onset of incredibly flexible AJAX coding. The long and the short of it is that if you have Frames on your website then you are starting off at a disadvantaged position that cannot be truly search engine friendly no matter what you do. There are, however, some remedial fixes that will tie you over until you can redesign your site; yes I said redesign. The fix that I recommend is to use a noframes tag whereby you place another version of your web page inside of your framed page. This ‘backup’ page is what the search engines will view; here you can place relevant content and navigational elements so that the search engines can at least navigate portions of your site that are (hopefully) not framed.
  • 2. FLASH

There was a big brouhaha that Flash had become search engine indexable and you no longer had to worry about its search engine issues. Frankly, I have not seen the fruits of this ‘improvement’ to a respectable degree yet so I still consider it a kiss of death for websites designed solely in Flash. If you have a Flash-only website then I recommend one of these two options; one is to design an html version of your website and make the home page of your website html rather than Flash where you can then allow users to choose between html or Flash. The second option is to redesign the site so that it mixes both html and flash together. For example, this might mean implementing Flash amidst content on an HTML page as you would an image. I realize there are certain limitations to this option but if you can create a slick site in this manner then you will have the best of both worlds; clean search engine friendly content along with an interactive, multimedia feel. Just remember that the majority of relevant text should be in HTML format for the search engines to index.

XML Sitemap Creation Tools

    • Keyword Research Tools

Before conducting any search engine promotion it is extremely important
to know the 'terrain' of your online marketplace. The following tools will aid you by providing a glimpse into the searching habits of your prospective customers.

      1. KeywordDiscovery **** Highly Recommended

This is an impressive tool that will provide you with a glimpse into the annual search frequencies for particular search terms. Also of relevance is a graph provided in the paid version which outlines the seasonal use of keywords (i.e. when is your phrase searched for less during the year). This type of seasonal data can help you plan the keyword targets for varying seasons, ultimately saving you money.

      2. WordTracker -
this tool has been around a while so the services it provides are time tested and informative. WordTracker is used and recommended by the best in SEO.

      3. Overture
        Suggestion Tool
        - this tool is provided to you when you become
an Overture client and it is extremely useful for finding highly searched
terms in a particular marketplace. Just beware that the highest searched
phrase may also mean the most competitive. Additionally, the tool is often painfully slow!!

      4. MSN AdLabs - highly recommended! Totally free, this great toolset is enjoyable to explore and use. There is some debate that the data is very worthwhile because of Microsoft's relatively low level of traffic (in comparison to other search engines) but I believe it is worth using.

    • Website Analytics Tools

      1. ClickTracks **** Highly Recommended

StepForth uses ClickTracks exclusively because we find their software and support to be second to none in the analytics realm. We love it so much that we now offer ClickTracks reporting services to our clientele. See more information on StepForth's ClickTracks services here.

      2. Google Analytics

Opened to the public as a free service in August 2006 this program is very powerful and flexible. It features integration with Google Adwords promotion and a whole host of very cool reports. Our only caveat is a significant one... Google is not very transparent as to what is being done with the data that is collected from your site.

      3. Omniture

Probably the most complex and full featured web analytics program available today. Our experience with Omniture has been very positive but the system is too intense for small business. If you have a large company or a site with loads of traffic (think millions of unique visitors per month) then this is the program for you.

      4. WebTrends

We had extensive experience with this program in the early years of StepForth and it was a great tool then but it is even better now. Here is a link to the WebTrends Small Business demo page.

BLOGGING | Key Tips for Optimizing Blogs & Feeds

    • Key Tips
For those in a rush or who have already read my blogs 101 article the following tips are very worthwhile reading - if just for their importance as reminders:

      • It is extremely important that RSS auto-discovery tags be placed in the header of every page within a website that has feeds available. By doing so you will provide users and search engines alike with a simple method of being notified that you have RSS feed(s) and it will allow immediate subscription without fuss. In contrast simply having a RSS logo hyperlinked with a feed provides little or no benefit and does not provide auto-notification that a feed is available.

Furthermore it is recommended to create a unique auto-discovery tag for each available RSS feed and place them all in the header. If you think you have too many then I would recommend choosing the feeds that are most relevant to the page content.

      • A WordPress plugin was noted called the "SEO Title Tag Plugin". This plugin really impressed me because it allows WordPress users to see and individually customize the title tags of every post within the associated blog; without a doubt a powerful capability since title tags play a significant role in rankings.

      • If you use paid Press Release services to disseminate your latest company news then it also works to your advantage to create a separate blog specifically used for your press releases. In this regard you can use the associated RSS feed to get some free publicity by submitting it to blog directories and other blog-syndicating properties.

      • If you are finding it difficult to get the word out about a particular piece of news then Greg Jarboe has a great idea for you: track down the key bloggers that appear to be driving the news in your industry and contact them with your story.

If your story interests even one of the bloggers and gets published then you could get a massive amount of publicity for zero dollars.

During the presentation of this concept Greg Jarboe utilized a powerful online tool called BuzzLogic to identify which people drove the latest news in key topics. Unfortunately BuzzLogic appears to be priced well out of the capabilities of many small businesses (at $12,000/yr minimum) so I will provide a very basic free alternative to determining the leaders of a particular topic.

Step 1) Search in your favorite search engine for the particular topic. Within the results separate the blogs from the other content. If you do not find at least 10 bloggers then try search again with different wording for the same topic.

Step 2) Look at each blog individually and look for indications of readership or popularity. For example perhaps one of the website has a Feedburner subscription counter with the blog's current readership OR take the URL of the blog and conduct a backlink check on Yahoo using "linkdomain:www..com" (without the quotes) to see which blogs have the most inbound links. Sort these blogs according to their popularity.

Step 3) Find contact information on each site and then contact the writer(s) starting with the most trafficked blogs and pitch your news/idea/story.

Note: I am not saying the steps above have anywhere near the quality of results that a full-fledge program like BuzzLogic has but it is certainly a great place to start.

      • Promote your latest blog posting by taking advantage of a popular blogger's vanity. Compliment them within your key article (somehow) using their full name and perhaps provide a link back to their website. Chances are that the blogger often keeps an eye on blog postings or sites that utilize their name. When they visit your posting there is a good chance they will read it.
    • General Blog and Feed Optimization Tips:
      1. Providing full text feeds was noted regularly throughout the presentation as a far superior method for creating backlinks and getting found online.
      2. Your blog feed should have 20 or more items never the minimum 10.
      3. Provide a feed for every category your site/blog offers.
      4. Ensure that you create keyword rich blog posts and ensure that your brand is well represented within the text.
      5. Ensure the most important keyword/phrase is listed in the blog title.
