- While newspapers were the most common source of information, they accounted for just 123 out of 628 total original information sources, or just shy of 20 percent. And a huge chunk of that, up to half, came from links in the Abbreviated Pundit Roundup, which is specifically designed to track what some of the nation's top pundits are yammering about.

It is the big papers and the networks who often lack a fundamental underdtanding of how the government truly functions. They focus too much White House press conferences and high-level events. When they do cover important happenings at the agency level, their reporters tend to gloss over complexities and even miss key facts. The trend towards specialized journalism is a good one.
Here's a little secret: those 'niche' publications by and large cover the gov't more extensively than the MSM and certainly are far more valuable than the second-rate regional bureaus now fading from the scene.

- many of these niche publications, Food Chemical News among them, are independently published and are not creatures of the industries they cover.
- the real change in journalism is not the emergence of niche publications -- which have been around forever -- but the weakening of traditional general circulation newspapers at the same time bloggers and other nontraditional sources of news are emerging.
- Bloggers and other niche media cover government at the level of detail where the dirty work is done -- a level generally overlooked by the mainstream media as they cover the big story du jour and flit from scandal to scandal.

We use Twitter to post live quarter-by-quarter updates at Friday night football games.
In addition simply to pushing out new stories and blog posts via Twitter, I’ve used it to live blog football games — uploading photos with Twitpic — and to cover an Obama rally on campus.

- At work I like to use Twitter to keep up with the few sources that I follow, and who follow me. It’s been incredibly valuable because they can sometimes point me in the direction toward a source I didn’t know existed. They can also give insight to the inner workings of a subject I am working on.
- It’s so much easier to ask a question to my locals on Twitter than to call each and every one of them. I just wouldn’t have time to call that many people.
- I can and have been at school board meetings and tweeted some details to people who I thought would be interested. They were, and the information they told me made the story all the better. The world seems more open with Twitter when your sources are on there. It’s all about accessibility.
- This might sound silly but they seem more like people than sources, because I read about them planting in their garden, or going in for surgery, or any other life issue that happens on a daily basis (that they tweet about).
