Technology Fosters Communications and Parental Engagement - The Educators' Royal Treatment
"Technology Fosters Communications and Parental Engagement"
Communication, recognition, and motivation have long been challenges for educators. Parents often struggle to obtain day-to-day information to support their child’s progress while teachers strive to foster greater parental engagement. Although report cards offer specific performance information several times per year, most schools rely on students to be the main conduit of information regarding their daily performance, supplemented by periodic and often broad-based communications from the teacher or school. However, if we look at fundamental recognition programs in the business world, we see an approach that embodies a complete role reversal.
Web-based Video Transcoding – A Beautiful Sight! » Moving at the Speed of Creativity
Presenters in our 2009 conference are following a new set of procedures to DIRECTLY upload their files to both DotSub and Blip.tv, where their videos are converted / transcoded into Flash versions (on both sites) and into m4v (iPod compatible video) and mp3 (audio only) formats on Blip. Use of these two websites as the exclusive sources for presentations this year may pose more accessibility issues for teachers at schools where content filters block most or all video sharing sites like these. For that reason, organizers have created an accessibility survey we invite you to take and share your experiences this year accessing K-12 Online Conference materials both at work and at home.

The lessons are designed as templates which teachers can modify to use in their specific subject areas.

Computer program helps students with music, literacy skills
Students at a Florida middle school are enhancing their musical literacy through SmartMusic, a software program that scores students' attempts to play along with sheet music on a computer screen. Teachers can review the students' work and type in feedback and grades. The program does more than just improve musical knowledge, the school's band director said. "I have seen the results of their growth academically alongside what they are doing musically," he said. The Tampa Tribune (Fla.)

The Top 10 Free Educational Video Games « Educational Games Research
"The main reason for inclusion in the top 10 was the impact a game had on the educational gaming field. Some of these are getting rather long in the tooth as far as games go, yet their impact is still being felt in educational research that was foundational or continues to be published. On the other hand, new titles are coming out all the time and this list may well change in the future."
