Italy police arrest 8 in Mafia wind farms plot
-
Italian police on Tuesday arrested mobsters, businessmen and local politicians who allegedly used corrupt practices and bribes to gain control of a project to build wind farms in Sicily.
Operation "Aeolus," named after the ancient Greek god of winds, netted eight suspects, arrested in the Trapani area of western Sicily, as well as in Salerno on the Italian mainland and in the northern city of Trento.
UFO blamed for destroyed British wind turbine
-
Debate erupted on Thursday over who or what caused the mysterious destruction of a giant wind turbine in northern England - with everything from UFOs to the freezing winter weather taking the blame.
Residents of Conisholme in Lincolnshire discovered that a 72-foot (21.9-metre) long metal blade has been torn off a turbine at their local wind farm while another has been badly damaged.
Problems threaten to blow UK wind energy off course
-
Executives say difficulties in building farms and connecting them to the national power grid, unwillingness by investors to fund them and a shortage of turbines could stop Britain hitting its target of generating 15 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
Yet at the current rate which wind farms are being built, the UK will generate only about 5 to 7 percent of its energy from renewables by 2020, Scottish & Southern Energy Plc's (SSE) chief executive Ian Marchant said earlier this year.
Energy giant pays up over wind farm TV disruption
-
ENERGY giant ScottishPower is paying for Freeview boxes and satellite TV for hundreds of homes after a wind farm disrupted the signal.
The power firm has spent thousands of pounds ensuring people in Carmunnock, to the south of Glasgow, are not affected by nearby Whitelee wind farm.
Wind farm developers offering 'bribes' to local communities, campaigners say
-
Developers are "bribing" communities to back wind farms by offering to pay for lunch clubs for pensioners and children's play parks, according to campaigners.

Wind turbines cause health problems, residents say

"I had problems with my heart, with my eyes, my digestive system," Marshall told CTV News. "It traumatizes your whole body."
Dr. Nina Pierpont, a pediatrician in upstate New York, has interviewed dozens of people who live near windmills in Canada, the United States and Europe.
Wind farm fears after turbine is destroyed

SHOCKING footage of a malfunction that destroyed a Danish wind turbine has been passed to the News Telegraph - by a district councillor concerned over the future of Ashbourne's first wind farm
No merit in wind energy - report
-
WIND FARMS are a waste of time and money as a form of renewable energy because they are expensive and distort the market for green power, according to an influential new report, writes David Wilcock.
Excessive subsidies make them an inefficient way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, says a study by the Renewable Energy Foundation (REF) think tank.
New research shows that the eco-friendly windmill becomes a serious waste hazard when it is no longer in use

The results from a Danish study published in the International Journal of Technology, Policy and Management show that by 2040, wind power dominated countries will be left with millions of tonnes of scrap metal, much of which cannot be recycled.
'The rubbish problem exists and it's mainly the blades that cause the problem. They are made from composite materials, which are difficult to separate into clean sections for recycling,' said the head of the study, Per Dannemand Andersen from the Technical University of Denmark.
Stand up against landowners tempted by cash
-
Make no mistake this is all about money, and lots of it. Tens of millions of pounds are on offer to these early pioneers of wind energy who are hoping to ride rough-shod over the clearly voiced wishes of over 80 per cent of their previous fellow parishioners.
When the wind stops - the other side of the wind turbine argument
-
The purpose of this article is to make a serious contribution to the national debate currently underway and to establish, once and for all, one very basic and simple fact.
Despite what one might be led to believe by the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) and other wind lobbyists there are relatively frequent periods when there is virtually no wind and, therefore, virtually no output from wind turbines, however wide their distribution throughout the UK. -
"Extreme lows or highs in wind speed are a natural feature of the UK wind climate; however a diversified wind power system would be less affected as it is rare that these extreme events affect large areas of the country at the same time. This report found that:
"Low wind speed conditions affecting 90 per cent or more of the UK would occur in around one hour every five years during winter."
Renewables firm should admit defeat
-
IT seems the wind farm developer Renewable Energy Systems Ltd (RES) has been winded by its own inaccuracy.
The Denbrook Wind Farm developers admit and regret making an error, and have been obliged to allow the issue of noise to be re-examined by returning to public inquiry.
It seems they produced erroneous information when processing noise data used as part of the project assessment, and consequently approval of the proposed nine-turbine development at a previous public inquiry may have been based on misleading information.
Turbine blade was thrown 1km from site
-
Specifically, there have been two turbine ADVERTISEMENT
accidents in Denmark this year which have prompted the Danish Climate Minister, Connie Hedegaard, to demand an investigation.
One accident led to the blades being thrown up to 1km.
Peter Wenzel Kruse, spokesperson for the turbine company involved, Vestas, stated "they're not infallible, but we are learning from our mistakes".
The last word in debate on wind turbines...
-
An engineer in the energy industry was quoted as saying, 'No wind turbine will ever recover even a fraction of the total energy expended in its construction, erection and ultimate de-commissioning'.
Alas, we have a government devoted to gesture politics, manifested by spending vast amounts of taxpayers' money to give the impression of 'doing something', but in reality achieving little, and nothing of genuine value.
Judge hears Fayette wind turbine debate
Iberdrola wants to place 27 wind-powered turbines over a 3.5-mile section of the Chestnut Ridge in Wharton, Georges and Springhill townships to generate electricity for the company's South Chestnut Ridge Windpower Project.
Farmhouse horror as turbine blade smashes through roof
-
The turbine was one of a batch of 11 defective machines installed on farms in Northern Ireland with the help of European funding provided by the Department of Agriculture.
All 11 of the Chinese-built turbines, sourced from the same supplier, have broken down but the farmers have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket and they complain that no-one is doing anything to help.
Parcel owners act against Lyme
Ten town of Lyme property owners have brought an Article 78 proceeding against the Town Council, claiming it improperly rejected a petition protesting the adoption of a local law regulating the siting of wind turbines.
Group opposed to wind farm near Carlock to get day in court
The group of residents trying to stop the construction of White Oak Energy Center near their homes will have their lawsuit against White Oak Wind Energy LLC and the McLean County Board and Zoning Board of Appeals heard Oct. 27 in McLean County Court.
"The merits of the case are substantial and include numerous constitutional violations that occurred during the process of approving the special use permit for the construction ... of 100, 137-ton, 499-foot (tall) wind turbines in an area that includes no fewer than 450 households," the statement reads.

OPPONENTS of turbines across Wales were given a boost yesterday when an energy giant abandoned controversial proposals for a new wind farm.
