Identity theft - the facts - vnunet.com

  • An even more advanced, and harder to detect, form of this con has come to
light recently nicknamed pharming. This involves
criminals using computer security holes to reprogram computers that allocate the
addresses for all web pages so even if you key in the correct web address, your
web browser may be directed to a bogus site. Such attacks are technically
possible although none have been confirmed as yet.

Max Blumberg Positioning Game: Identity Theft and Pharming

  • captures your log in security details as you type them in
  • takes the form of a trojan virus which sits on your machine waiting for you to log into your bank, provides a genuine bank web address and genuine looking bank page

RSA defends EMC deal - Computer Business Review

  • RSA's core technologies are cryptographic tools, two-factor authentication tokens and related software, and key management software. EMC is understood to be primarily interested in the cryptography and key management tools.

EMC Acquires RSA

  • Tucci said on the call that "the technology company that seamlessly integrates information storage with information management with information protection with information security, and centrally manages and orchestrates this information infrastructure, will be a huge winner in the technology marketplace, and the technology company that's going to do that is EMC."
  • "EMC is the leading provider of information management solutions," said Tucci. "Bringing RSA into the fold provides EMC with industry-leading identity and access management technologies and best-in-class encryption and key management software to help EMC deliver information lifecycle management (ILM) securely."

Cyota gives RSA token-less authentication: ZDNet Australia: News: Security

  • "[Cyota] has machine-based authentication -- it scans your
laptop or PC and takes a number of sample readings of the setup,"
said Pickard who said the system is likely to be 'suspicious' if
a user that usually accesses their online bank from a certain
laptop in Sydney suddenly logs in from a different machine based
    in Eastern Europe or China.

"It manages the risk by profiling - such as the number of
times you have logged in, the time of day, the place you are
logging in from. All these things go into creating a risk score,"
    said Pickard.

Pickard said that anybody that is flagged 'suspicious' may
have to answer additional security questions or authenticate by
    phone before being given access.

"If your risk score is below this number then you are in, if
it is above that number then you have to do another form of
authentication -- such as another question, a phone call, even a
    one time password," he said.

  • one of Cyota's products is a product
called eSphinx, which collects information about the user during
the usual authentication process and creates a risk assessment to
help decide if the user should be treated suspiciously.

MasterCard and Cyota: Anti-phishing trends

  • Amir Orad
  • Cyota's anti-pharming system constantly scans the internet looking for potential pharming attacks. The system alerts Cyota's 24x7 Anti-Fraud Command Center (AFCC) in suspicious cases, and each attack is then qualified by a Cyota fraud analyst. Cyota's AFCC has over 24 months experience dealing with phishing attacks and other online fraud incidents. Once a pharming attack is identified, the AFCC handles the attack similar to a phishing attack - it analyzes the attack, proactively shuts down the spoofed site, conducts forensics, deploys technical counter-measures and reports the results to the bank. To date, Cyota's AFCC has shut down more than 7,000 spoofed sites in 65 countries, and lowered the typical lifespan of an attack to five hours from an industry average of six days.
