In the first study to use avatars to prime negative responses in a desktop virtual setting, Jorge Peña, assistant professor in the College of Communication, demonstrated that the subtext of an avatar's appearance can simultaneously prime negative (or anti-social) thoughts and inhibit positive (or pro-social) thoughts inconsistent with the avatar's appearance.

"With the meditation training they would acknowledge the pain, they realize what it is, but just let it go. They learn to bring their attention back to the present."
- "What's neat here is that this is the briefest known way to promote a meditation state and yet it has an effect in pain management. People who want to make use of the technique might not need a meditation facilitator – they might be able to get the necessary training off the internet, " Zeidan said. "All you have to do is use your mind, change the way you look at the perception of pain and that, ultimately, might help alleviate the feeling of that pain."

Of the 6,587 articles, 6,463 (98.1%) were in English, 68 in German, 42 in French, and 14 in other languages. The total number of unique articles returned (i.e. found by other users) was 5,464, giving a success rate of 82.95%. The oldest article was from Science, dated 1884 [23].
A question to consider, then, is, how much money was saved by the people who viewed the articles? (Conversely, how much was lost by the publishers?) The prices of individual articles ranges. Some are available for as little as $7.00, and others for as much as $50.00 for academics, and $100.00 for non-academics (e.g. [25]). At an approximate value of $30.00 per article, the 23,461 views of the articles amount to $703,830.00 over the six-month period. Extrapolated across a year, this translates into a little more than $1.4M.

Je ne crois pas vraiment à une concurrence entre les deux outils. Ils correspondent à deux régimes de communication différents. L'un, l'e-mail, est traditionnel, c'est la communication interpersonnelle privée, dont la croissance continue. L'autre, la communication à travers les réseaux sociaux, est nouveau, et connaît, pour certain publics et dans certains contextes, une très forte croissance.
La nouveauté qu'introduit la dynamique des réseaux sociaux, c'est l'apparition d'une communication privée en public, une sorte de parler à la cantonade. Les utilisateurs adressent des messages qui sont parfois explicitement destinés à telle ou telle personne, mais au lieu de leur envoyer un e-mail, ils rendent public un échange personnalisé. C'est une manière particulière de socialiser la communication personnelle en la montrant au réseau de contacts. On renoue ainsi avec des fonctions de communication de groupe que l'on pouvait connaître avec la liste de discussion ou le mail adressé à plusieurs personnes.

- On a ouvert les portes étanches de la communication personnelle à un public plus large.
- Il y a l'idée que ce fil d'information continue donne une conscience de l'environnement, "une ambiant awareness", qui crée une attention continue. Le téléphone mobile, qui permet de porter avec soi les informations du réseau, se glisse parfaitement dans cette perspective.
- Twitter, par exemple, peut servir d'outil à la petite conversation. Mais dès que le nombre de "suiveurs" (followers) augmente, on passe à une énonciation distanciée et sous contrôle et à une production d'informations d'intérêt très général.
- Pour l'instant, on a toujours séparé le canal privé et le canal public. On est désormais en train d'inventer une zone intermédiaire, un clair-obscur. Cela passe par une phase d'apprentissage. Au début, l'utilisateur met tout le monde dans son réseau, puis il va commencer à comprendre les effets de ses interventions. Il va donc souvent y avoir une reconstruction du réseau, plutôt orientée vers la famille, ou vers les collègues, et les messages vont s'adapter au public.
- C'est typique de Facebook de créer des liens faibles entre les personnes, de maintenir une forme de relation en pointillé. Cela désinhibe la capacité d'entrer en contact avec des personnes qui n'appartiennent pas au réseau des proches.
- Google Wave s'attaque à un autre partage entre communication synchrone et asynchrone. Les usages des réseaux sociaux se déploient tous dans une zone d'échange asynchrone ; Google Wave, entre autres choses, essaie de raccourcir et d'accélérer les échanges vers le quasi-synchrone.

Online seniors regularly use email (94%), go to the internet to look up health and medical information (71%), read news (70%), and manage their finances and banking (59%). They also turn online for gaming: Approximately half (47%) of online Matures regularly play free online games.

However, Boomers are tech-savvy and nearly as likely as younger generations to own a digital camera, DVD player and cell phone. And while younger generations are more likely to send and receive text messages - 92% of Millennials ages 18 -29 and 76% of Gen Xers ages 30-44 text - half of all Boomers (48%) and 18% of Matures also engage in this activity.
- “The technology adoption behaviors of the younger generations is studied frequently and their impact on advertising and marketing is widely known.” said CTAM President and CEO Char Beales. “But this study is unique in that it reveals opportunity among the Boomers and Matures, who have significant purchasing power, are active online and more comfortable with technology than often reported.”

Cette enquête est donc une nouvelle pierre dans le jardin de
ce que j’appelle « l’illusion spontanéiste », consistant à croire que
les étudiants seraient spontanément acculturés à Internet, à la recherche et à

- Les entreprises qui enregistrent le plus grand nombre de gains tangibles sont géographiquement situées….en Inde, puis en Amérique du Nord puis vient l’Europe, un peu décrochée devant la zone Asie Pacifique. Je ne connais pas du tout l’Inde mais il m’est avis que ce classement est la preuve si besoin était de l’impact évident de la dimension culturelle sur les processus de changement et d’adoption.

- - Les gains les plus flagrants concernent l’accès au savoir, aux experts. Ce qui me semble dans la lignée de la socialisation de process et de l’importance de la résolution de problèmes au quotidien.

- - L’utilisation des outils par l’encadrement est essentiel. Naturellement, puisqu’on parle d’outils de travail, il est des domaines ou le community manager ne peut se substituer à ceux qui ont une légitimité opérationnelle.
