Color Balance Adjustment with Curves - Photo Tips @ Earthbound Light

  • you can also correct for color casts with Curves
  • Curves transforms each pixel by locating it in terms of brightness or luminosity along the bottom axis, then going up until you hit the curve line, then going across to the vertical axis to find out its new value.

The 1-2-3 of Photoshop Levels - Photo Tips @ Earthbound Light

  • In order to avoid clipping either shadows or highlights though, we need a good way to tell where to set the black and white points.
  • we can use the histogram to guide us by moving black and white points to the ends of the histogram curve. Any points in the histogram to the left of the black point will surely end up black, and anything to the right of the white point will become burned out white.

stock.xchng - davyboy79's blog - Tut: Selectively Blur a Background {GIMP}

  • Sometimes the background to a photograph distracts from the subject
itself. One of the tools in our arsenal is the ability to blur it out.
This tutorial for GIMP will show you how to perform a basic blurring,
    whilst leaving the subject intact.

Simulating Shallow Depth of Field with The GIMP

  • One of the facts of life of shooting with consumer digicams and their
associated small imaging sensors is that it can be difficult to achieve
a shallow depth of field. Having large depth of field is usually a
good thing, leading to pictures in which all of the important parts of
the picture are in focus. But sometimes you really want shallow depth
of field to isolate a subject against a blurred background, as is often
    done in e.g. portraiture.

Replacing a Foreground with The GIMP

  • I get lots of email from GIMP users who have discovered my tutorials.
Sometimes they pose interesting questions that get me thinking. One
fellow wanted to take photos of children in front of a chroma key
background (usually some shade of blue) and then cut out the kids and
place them in christmas-y background scenes. Thinking about this a
little bit got me interested in taking another look at
    replacing the background in a
    photograph
. The difference this time around is the chroma key
background. It should be a lot easier to select the subject when you
can control the background like that. In this tutorial we'll explore a
different method for isolating/selecting the subject, cutting it and
pasting it into a different image, thus replacing the
    foreground
    of the new image.

Cosmetic Retouching with The GIMP

  • This is the second part of a two-part tutorial. If you haven't yet read
the first part, Soft Focus Portraiture, I
recommend that you read it first.
