Excellent article from Scholastic Administrator Magazine that pulls from a wide variety of sources including Peggy Sheehy, Jim Gates, several college professors, and current research. (oh, and yes, I have a little in there also.) This is a good one to facilitate discussions about reaching today's students as it is backed up by a variety of sources.

Experiments in Backchannel: Collaborative Presentations Using Social Software, Google Jockeys, and Immersive Environments
The earliest paper in backchanneling. I've seen the quieter students come out. Also, having Google Jockeys is essential to the process. Also, a way to archive the channel and sort of agreed upon use for the backchannel is helpful.

Highlights of State and Local Implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act
This is the summary of the findings. Interestingly, only a small part of the funds was spent on admin - most funds on instruction and instructional support - the funds, although targeted to high-poverty areas, still do not bridge the local funding gaps - with high poverty schools still having 7% less funds than others.
