Learn 4 Life » Out of our tree … are we weird or are we in the vanguard? New ways forward for teacher Continuing Professional Development? Beyond TeachMeet…
Love this post from my friend Leon Cych in the UK where they had a Continuing Professional Development Experience in a treehouse in a park in London (yes, look at the pictures, I kid you not!)
They discussed (and documented via mp3, text, and video) the CPD model (and how to fix it), Web 2 tools, how to be more inclusive of all teachers in ongoing professional development, cost effectiveness of CPD options and a quite interesting topic they called "working outside of silos." (Very interesting.)
Perhaps silos most interest me because often I feel I am in one -- so many of us are working on similar things, but how many are truly sharing what they are doing - it is a constant struggle to share what is happening.
Anyway - this post is enough to give you mental cogitation food for the next few weeks AND Leon documents how they documented the experience.
Hmmm... wonder if there will be any trees in Denver.

The Treehouse Gallery public Art project in Regents Park generously gave us time and space to devote to this meeting about ICT CPD for the 21st Century and Drew Buddie suggested it would be the perfect venue for a meetup…

The Student Affairs Blog: New in the Toolbox: Emotional Intelligence
There are some GREAT books on Emotional intelligence, but Debra Sanborn, Program Director at Iowa State University, is using an emotional intelligence assessment as part of the "toolbox of assessments that she relies upon for identifying issues challening students in the first weeks of college."
She says that EQ has an 85% predictor rate of success in college. The EQ-i assesses 5 aras: interpersonal, intrapersonal, stress management, adaptability and general mood."
Who is using this in high school? I read a book on this to help my two kids with learning disabilities but if there is a test or profile that would help us with these kids - to develop emotional intelligence, then we should do it.
Life success is SO MUCH MORE than test scores! Hate that we have to have a "test" to measure this one - although the result is more an indicator of a person's behavior, albeit self-reported.

How to Change People’s Attitudes
Fascinating Article about how to change people's attitudes.
-
You sure you sure?” It turns out, we’re not sure we’re sure according to the classic 1973 study by Goethals and Reckman. In the study, researchers invited high schoolers to discuss their opinions on an issue—in this case, school segregation and whether bussing would help racial integration. Some time later, study participants returned for another discussion. This time, however, they were divided into pro and con groups. Inside each separated groups, Goethals and Reckman placed a “confederate,” a person armed with arguments for the opposing viewpoint. The goal was to reverse the groups’ outlook. In the end, both confederates successfully reversed the groups’ opinions.

groups couldn’t accurately recall their original position. Many claimed their previous beliefs were less definite than researchers originally observed.
