The Internet in Society: Empowering or censoring citizens? - Eventbrite
I can't tell if this event will be online too, but if you're in London - it is a good one. Love the description and appreciate Terry Freedman pointing me to it:
"many authoritarian governments are now also beginning to exploit cyberspace for their own purposes; some of them appear to be succeeding in subverting the internet's democratising potential. We may have overestimated the internet's ability to bring change and underestimated the role that political, social and cultural forces play in determining how new technologies are being adopted.
Could the internet actually inhibit rather than empower civil society? Join Evgeny Morozov as he outlines the dramatically different ways in which the internet's potential can be utilised by citizens and regimes."
Lesson Planning Information for US Presidential Speech to Students Grades 7-12
Here are the lesson planning guides for grades 7-12.
I Am What I Learn video competition for US students
Starting on Sept 8, the US dept of education will ask students to respond to the President's Back to school challenge to create videos, up to 2 minutes in length describing steps that they will take to improve their education.
This will be the website for the Iam what I learn website.
Who Will Be Obama's Secretary of Education?: The President-Elect's Front-Runners | Edutopia
Frontrunners for US Secretary of Education from Edutopia.
Op-Ed Contributor - What’s the Point of Daylight Time? - NYTimes.com
Looks likely that president elect Obama will support elimination of Daylight savings time in the US. This op-ed piece in the New York times talks about how DST does not link to energy conservation as once thought. The one thing it WOULD make easier is global collaboration - Google Cal doesn't convert to dST until AFTER it happens and we all missed a meeting.
Obama White House to Broadcast Weekly Radio Address on YouTube
Barack Obama to deliver weekly presidential address via Youtube.
-
The President’s weekly radio address, a staple of American politics since the Franklin Roosevelt administration, will be posted to YouTube, starting this week with the Democratic address (the party not in power has also traditionally broadcast a weekly radio soundbite). The videos will also be posted to Change.gov, the President-elect’s transition site that launched last week.
The 21st Century Centurion: Yes, We Can, Mr. President-Elect!
Excellent blog post from Elizabeth Holmes reflecting on the importance (and failures) of American education including some great graphics and photos I hadn't yet seen (but would be great stats for some of you presenters out there.) Nice blog, Elizabeth.
Dangerously Irrelevant: Edublogger letters to the next President
Edublogger letters to the next president started by Scott McLeod - I'll get to this, but want to share it for everyone who wants to share.
War in Iraq - Digi Teen
Students have such a way of working things out. I'm in tears looking at these -- maybe this is oversimplified - but these are 8th and 9th graders. Look at this.
Auto financing aid sought
I'm sorry, but this is ridiulous - I just had to put this out there -- hands are out everywhere in the US -- say bailout and everyone runs to get their hand in the pie. I have a real problem with this.
