Here is information on Instructure Canvas, the open source code and the cloud offering. Again, this is a nice option on the LMS table - I particularly like the integration with web 2 services.

I'm impressed with the learning analytics that are in the Instructure Canvas offering. Instructure canvas is open source - you can download and use for free but if you host in the cloud, you can host through Instructure. They have just launched a K12 offering and the simple streamlined look and integration with social media has this on the top of my list as we look at an LMS for our school. WE don't have a lot of money but want simple and robust and I'm impressed with what I see. I had a call with the founder.

Use this to create an encrypted drive for your financial records if you have them on your laptop! Remember to backup the folder as well! It is free.

I would also recommend this for those who have private files on their computer like guidance counselors.

2. What examples of openness stand out to you as being valuable/worthwhile?

3. WHY do you believe in the value of open education?

If you are interested in participating we would love to have you be a part of this exciting opportunity, to collectively gather voices across the globe in answering the question “what is the value of openness”. Have fun with your video – the more creative the better.

Just got a press release about this "the University of the People" where they say:

"Comprising arguably the most diverse university class, 178 students from around the globe will begin classes next Thursday, September 10, at University of the People (UoPeople), the world’s first tuition-free online university."

I don't know how the accreditation will work. I don't know who teaches or how this works. I do know that this sort of thing is continuing to get press and be discussed as open source hits the education movement full force. There will continue to be shake up and this is only the beginning, and yet we hear more news every day in this direction.

Universities need to understand that at some point someone is going to perfect an open source type model that does have a meaningful benefit for the participants and does receive recognition as being legitimate and when that day happens, education as we know it will transform in ways we do not understand.

"Founded by educational entrepreneur Shai Reshef in January 2009, University of the People (UoPeople; www.UoPeople.org) is the world’s first tuition-free, online academic institution. Based on the principles of e-learning and peer-to-peer teaching, coupled with open-source technology and courseware, UoPeople is designed to provide universal access to college studies, despite geographic and economic constraints. Enrollment is currently open for Term 1 of the 2010-2011 academic calendar."

The whitehouse.gov will look the same to most people except that what is behind it is part of the open source movement with the whitehouse code - now powered by Drupal -- is open source.

For educators, if you've found administrators objecting to the open source movement, maybe you should consider using the white house as an example.

Open source textbooks are not going away as grants and other things continue to happen in this arena. The momentum is shifting. In this NASBE received a Hewlett Foundation grant to help states revise frameworks to allow inclusion of Open Education resources. If you work with state standards from the state level, perhaps you might want to contact the NASBE.

Hat tip to my friend Janet Grtonneberg at CAST for sending me this one.

This open source textbook by Raleigh, N.C., math teacher Kenny Felder was part of the review of the first 16 digital texts submitted to California's review program as part of the free open-source digital textbook initiative by California's Governor Schwarzenegger. This textbook scored a 96 and met 26 of 27 standards. Felder teaches at Raleigh Charter High school.

Interesting tidbit in their press release this week:

"Flat World has announced 17 new author
titles under contract. Flat World's in-classroom beta test gets underway this
week, with 20 participating colleges and universities nationwide."

Open Textbooks may be closer -- this model is a more hybridized version. If we had a "wiki to print" tool or technology, then we could literally have grassroots teachers writing and creating textbooks together. This is interesting to follow
