WebSlides - Turning bookmarks and feeds into interactive slideshows…
I am using this feature at NECC quite a bit - you can turn bookmarks into webslides. It is very useful and helpful!
Hulu - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
(Warning - this movie is probably a PG-13 but not rated because it is online. Not for you to show your students at school, although, they are probably already watching it.)
This is a very viral video that a lot of the kids are talking about. (It came out LAST June but now is a hot seller on Amazon.) Neil Patrick Harris wants to join the Evil League of Evil. It is 42 minutes long. It is ironic how much of entertainment is becoming viral -- television can no longer control what gets watched - it gets "put out there" and then they see what is watched. In many ways, this viral way of video viewing is very interesting.
Not saying this should be watched -- it is quite hot with many college students. I could see how much that is said would resonate with college kids.
Listen to the vernacular - even though some of you may find this very napolean dynamite-ish.
"I'm just trying to change the world. I don't have time for a grudge match for every poser in a parka."
It grows on you -- stick with it.
Oh and be warned there are few words in here. But, no rating to catch it! (not sure why not rating movies just released online.) This is sponsored by XO laptop.
Geo Education
Google for Educators launches Geo Education today! Cool. It includes information on Google EArth, Maps, Sky, and Sketcup and lesson plans from teachers. It also includes tips on getting started with these tools in your classroom.
As you plan your summer PD, Geography teachers simply must get this on their list for fall!
Home - Microsoft Popfly
Microsoft Popfly lets you make mashups and build web pages without knowing code. I am to the point I don't teach the detailed web site creation coding I used to. I teach RSS, embedding, creating wikis, uploading media of all kinds, but I just don't know how important coding is any more at the basic level.
I want to spend some time tinkering with this.
Intel® Mash Maker
Intel Mashmaker is a tool that you download and "mashup" sites together. It is supposed to allow average everyday people to be able to mashup google sites, flickr, almost anything with what programmers call an api.
Setting up your PLN - Horizon Project 2008
Today on horizon, my students set up their PLN (personal learning network) in their RSS reader -- we use Netvibes although some switched to Google reader.
Here is how I will assess this:
I am assessing the students on this by having them print the page out and turn it in -- I'm also checking over their shoulders in lieu of printing -- but I may not get to everyone. -- In this blog post, I've REQUIRED 6 things on the page -- each is worth 10 points -- with 2 of those points being for a properly edited title in Netvibes (so that they may see what is what!) -- and then I have them find at least four additional sources of information for another 10 points each.
Knowing how to set up a PLN for a topic of study is a VITAL skill for the 21st century researcher. I like Netvibes because it is very simple -- one page interface.
Aviary - Creation on the Fly
I just asked for an invitation to aviary -- a suite of web based applications for images, typography, music, 3d images, video, and all types of artists. Fascinating site.
Microsoft Sends Letter to Yahoo! Board of Directors: Microsoft Sends Letter to Yahoo! Board of Directors
Microsoft continues to attempt to negotiate with Yahoo -- this is an important piece of information to take a look at for the horizon project students -- Microsoft + Yahoo = A viable competitor for google? Is Google hurting Microsoft that much? These are things to look at as you review emerging trends.
TwitterLocal
Now, this is cool -- you can type in your zip code and see the twitters of people within a certain distance of your zip code.
Youth Twitter
Youth twitter site where students are usingtwitter to communicate with one another in short 140 character bursts. I always see fascinating things here.
Docstoc.com Blog » Embed Documents into your Blog or Website
This is a great way to emped all types of documents directly into a blog post -- I'l be teseting this on my blog. This is very cool and is yet another way that people are sharing content. It is less about WHAT is being shared and more just about the fact that we can share it.
-
You can share and display any document (.doc, .pdf, .xls, .ppt) in your own blog or on any website where you can add embeded codes with the docstoc flash player.
diigo is in the top twitter cloud! | Diigo Message System
I find this fascinating that diigo has made the "top twitter" cloud. There are certainly a lot of people following it. They are very responsive and have done a great job. They deserve it.
As Horizon looks at collaboration and mashups, Diigo is something that the students will want to look at, both as a service AND at the way it has spread like wildfire, through basically "word of tweet."
YouTube - Diigo V3: Highlight & Share the Web! Social Bookmarking 2.0
This youtube video explains the "deal" with Diigo and how it can be used. This is excellent for researchers and educators. (You could even use this for grading!)
Shakespeare Sonnet Shake-Up
This website allows you to "mash up" shakespeare and mix lines from various sonnets.
Color Wars 2008
This is an example of a mashup --this is a massive game of rock-paper-scissors played using flickr (for the pictures of the "throw), twitter (for taunting) and some sort of database (for the game itself.)
Follow Twitter Conversations - Quotably.com
This website lets you follow conversations in twitter -- it is a handy tool to have when you're trying to extract meaning from one twitter that is obviously part of a longer conversation
