Siemens We Can Change The World Challenge
Middle-school students across the United States are invited to submit
their solutions to environmental problems in their communities. Teams of two to three students from sixth through eighth grade working with a teacher will identify an environmental issue in their community, research the issue using

Web-based curriculum tools.

Cable's Leaders in Learning Awards
Cable in the classroom has their leader in learning awards open this year. Last year I was a semifinalist. Don't know if I'll make any effort to apply for any more awards, but it is a great opportunity.
My local paper last year didn't even cover it although they came ot take pictures. I often get obstacles to what I'm doing simply because people don't understand it.
Knowles Science Teaching Foundation
Math and Science teachers -- beginning teachers should consider applying for these fellowships. These are in the United States. Here is what the ocmpany says about the fellowships (applications due Jan 15):
"The prestigious KSTF Teaching Fellowship is valued at nearly $150,000 over the course of five-years and supports aspiring teachers of promise as they embark on careers teaching high school science and mathematics. Designed to meet the financial and professional needs of beginning teachers, the Fellowship exposes educators to a variety of teaching resources, new curriculum materials, and research and experts in the field. Most importantly, the program fosters professional development within a community of high school science and mathematics teachers and prepares Fellows to become leaders in their field."
Once Upon A School
This from my email:
"This is Natasha Dantzig for the TED (Technology, Entertainment and
Design) Conference.
I'm writing to let you know that organizers of the TED Prize have announced an open challenge in support of author and philanthropist Dave Eggers and his 2008 TED Prize wish to collect 1,000 stories of private citizens engaged in their local public schools. Each year, three individuals are granted the TED Prize, which provides winners with a wish to change the world, $100,000 in seed money, and the support of the TED community in making the wish come true.
As an extension of Eggers initial wish, the open challenge asks individuals to design and implement new projects for local public school students. The three winning entries will receive a pass to the sold out TED2009 Conference to be held in Long Beach, California on February 4-7, 2009. "
Good luck with sharing. I find it interesting that the projects that are emerging between public and private schools and crossing the lines and boundaries between us (which is what we should be doing) could only be submitted by a public school person and then, may not be considered because it can only be for public school students. In some ways, the writing of the proposal itself is limiting because it doesn't see the vision of what is truly happening in education.

Members Project
American Express has a set of proposals for education and is asking us to vote on their proposals. The organizers of this particular project have contacted me directly and asked me to share it with you. Take a look. I do wish there wer emore specifics about the project as I think we've got a watered down version here. However, the more science and technology, the better.
