Can very young students connect globally (Kindergarten - 2nd grade). Here Ann Mirtchsin from Australia reflects on the Flat Classroom K-2 pilot project is setting out to see just how this works. This pilot project is a free- can we do it - figure it out - pilot/ bootcamp experience including 44 classrooms. It closed a few weeks a go and they are working and sharing. Here is just one of the reflections. As always, we'll openly share everything we learn and let you know if there is the volunteer support to keep this going. (I'm thinking there will be.) Such a great project.
Love watching this classroom make applesauce for the K-2 flatclassroom project. They are showing others about food in their region.

Resources on studying and understanding England and English heritage. These resources include a lovely Stonehenge Timeline and other historical. topics. These are some great resources for those studying world cultures as part of their global competency program.
Debating global issues is an important part of global competency. Here are some important and sometimes controversial issues like Child soldiers, nuclear weapons, child labor, Aids, poverty. Some very nice frameworks to use as we are ending the school year. After you finish your year end tests, you should consider some global competency lessons in your classroom to help students be aware of the world and also develop critical thinking skills. This is a great place to start.

Information on International children's day which began in Turkey. Here's some information on this event.
"Every year, the children in Turkey celebrate this "Sovereignty and Children's Day" as a national holiday. Schools participate in week-long ceremonies marked by performances in all fields in large stadiums watched by the entire nation. Among the activities on this day, the children send their representatives to replace state officials and high ranking bureaucrats in their offices. The President, the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Ministers, provincial governors all turn over their positions to children's representatives. These children, in turn, sign executive orders relating to educational and environmental policies. On this day, the children also replace the parliamentarians in the Grand National Assembly and hold a special session to discuss matters concerning children's issues.
Over the last two decades, the Turkish officials have been working hard to internationalize this important day. Their efforts resulted in large number of world states' sending groups of children to Turkey to participate in the above stated festivities. During their stay in Turkey, the foreign children are housed in Turkish homes and find an important opportunity to interact with the Turkish kids and learn about each other's countries and cultures. The foreign children groups also participate in the special session of the Grand National Assembly. This results in a truly international Assembly where children pledge their commitment to international peace and brotherhood.
April 23 is Children's Day in Turkey. Here is a lesson plan about this event. It is great to include holidays (because kids love them) but also because they provide teachable moments to bring awareness to events and cultures around the world.
A free Skype tutorial for those getting started. This is a wonderful entry level communication tool to get started with communicating with classrooms around the world.
I don't see the information on this study that says foreign language improves global competence but I think perhaps it is the interaction with the native speaker from another country that causes the improvement in global competence. It is time to start studying global collaborative projects and their impact on global competence. Another point is that this article says that "it has been proven that proficiency in speaking a second language increases overall academic achievement."
Unfortunately this author has no citations or links to follow and learn about. Perhaps it is citing the original NEA article. I just think this author can do better although I'm intrigued by what it says.
"According to a study by the National Education Association (NEA) in 2010, global competence stems from proficiency in a foreign language."
