Charlie Chaplin was a film icon of the silent film era. I grew up watching these films when they were really films on a reel in the dining room. Now you can download these 15 free films from online. I showed some of these to my children just so they'd understand this small part of culture.
When I taught digital film, I had the students create their own silent film and then add sound effects and musical scores so they could see the impact that sound has on their film.
Lifehacker still likes Handbrake, but this is an alternative to convert video that may work for me at school. Looks very easy and intuitive.
