Facebook Causes Barrow Teacher's Firing 111009 | myfoxatlanta.com
To me, this example is over the line but anything that takes away from your ability to teach is considered a problem and reason to fire you. I think this is no acceptable when the teacher had everything marked as private and did not allow parents nor admins on her facebook page - again, facebook is not secure.
Net Neutrality FAQ: What's in it for You - PC World
Net neutrality is an important issue being addressed by the US government right now to prevent companies from sort of creating their own version of the Internet. These rules are supposed to keep things "open." I'm also sending these to my digiteen students (you can follow digiteen at http://www.twitter.com/digiteen) and Flat Classroom students (http://www.twitter.com/flatclassroom) for work on their project.
Thirteen Ed Online - Digital Divide
Great lesson plan for teaching about the digital divide.
Stumbling Blocks: Playing It Too Safe Will Make You Sorry | Edutopia
Excellent article by Suzie Boss at edutopia about filtration. I think this is an article to print and send to IT departments and headmasters. Excellent writing.
Incredible article!

the same filters can stop teachers from accessing cutting-edge widgets and digital materials that have enormous potential for expanding learning.

"Our kids are going to be using these tools and sites anyway," she argues. "Don't we want to educate students about them at school?"

An Update to the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) « Thumann Resources
Lisa thuman blogged about the recent changes to the Children Internet Protection Act (CIPA) -- to those people who have rejected social networking and chats -- you're required to "educate minors on appropriate online safety including cyberbulling and interacting with others on social networking sites and in chat rooms."
How are you going to do this without using safe alternatives and then coach them on it? This is REQUIRED in the US if you get erate funds.
Get out there and get busy -- time for pushback. Lisa Thuman's article on this is an excellent read.
Digital literacy and the classroom « Rhondda’s Reflections - wandering around the Web
I love Rhondda's reflections on digital citizenship. She makes very profound, reasonable arguments as a teacher in the trenches and she has my vote 100% on what she's saying!!

We don’t leave our students alone and expect that they will figure out the disciplines of science, maths, English, etc. We guide them through each of these disciplines, educating them on the principles that work and help them gain knowledge and learning as they negotiate their way through the many ideas and directions made known to them.
-
Why is it, then, that schools expect students to work out effective digital strategies on their own

In addition to creating personal learning networks, we will also be creating personal entertainment networks (PEN's) -- all via this amazing thing we call RSS. Understanding RSS is not only important for learning but just living your life.

Encyclopedia Britannica Now Free For Bloggers
Encyclopedia Britannica is now free for bloggers from an article on 4/18/08 -- yet another reason for our students to blog. (I have students blogging publicly under pseudonyms.)
This is fascinating, but also interesting to see how Britannica is playing catch up to Wikipedia in the market it once owned. I wonder, which would be more authoriative to you, a wikipedia quote updated daily, or Brittanica updated less often that doesn't display the authors of its content?
Artsonia Kids Art Museum — The Largest Student Art Gallery on the Web!
This site claims to be the largest student arts gallery on the web! Looks fascinating. Not sure how they use first names and locations and get away with it. I'd like to know what those who have used it think about it.

Do You Read Blocked Blogs? at Change Agency
Bud the Teacher and Stephanie Sandifer are planning an I read blocked blogs day. This is going to be an event for educators advocating access. It would also be a great time to talk about ways to monitor when you provide access.
This also happens to be the first aspect of ad4dcss and we've listed it on the wiki. They have shirts that people can get and buttons for your blog.

This morning, Bud The Teacher, posted a request for designs for a 21st Century version of the “I Read Banned Books” buttons that we are all so familiar with. In response to this request, I played around with an idea:
