An article/ ebook on creating new learning spaces in the classroom. this one talks about the "pod room." I love the 7 spaces for learning that Ewan McIntosh wrote for us in our Choice Chapter in the Flat Classroom book - he espouses many of these same thoughts.
College professors say that students need to be unafraid to design. I think schools need to take a hard look at creativity, failure, and struggle required to help students be creative. Some students are afraid of it and it is often our best students who are afraid of failure who have trouble with it. A great article for teachers and administrators to discuss as we reinvent education.
"But, the fear of literally making these designs was a bright red flag for our faculty.
Students often traced their inhibitions back to childhood when they first grew conscious of their teacher and peers' judgment. One student vividly recalled what it was like to have a teacher title his drawing for him to avoid inevitable confusion from grown-ups. His "making trauma" was intensified when he was in fourth grade and one of his paintings mistakenly got put into a first grad art show. He didn't win.
This is the next step in using Web Making 101 for journalists. It is fascinating watching their work evolve. I would like to use this with my high school students. I hope Mozilla keeps it going.
This is a fun tool. You can upload your handwriting (mine is pretty awful) and turn it into a font. Of course, this has all sorts of issues with the authenticity of whether something was written by a person or not, however, you can do interesting things with this. (Students could as well, but I guess for now, a laser printed item looks laser printed and not hand writing, however, they could bring in something they say is a copy and it was copied and converted to handwriting font.) Just know this is there.
FRee paint software that is much more powerful than the native paint program. The students love this open source software.

This app lets you control cad and 3d environments like Google Sketchup. Really, the Ipad is now an interface with your regular computer and it is only beginning. The Maide video is definitely worth a watch and if you do anything with 3D design or CAD, this is worth a look.
