danieltenner.com — What problems does Google Wave solve?

Excellent article on what Google wave is intended to be: a step up from email to allow for document collaboration. OK, now I finally get it. Seeing people talk about it replacing twitter, etc. I was like "nah - not with THIS" but seeing this blog post made the light go on - a must read for those who want to truly understand what google wave is for and to not get so hyper about what it isn't.

The Data Liberation Front (the Data Liberation Front)

This is Google's website that will make it easier for you to get your data out of Google. This is certainly an admirable thing for Google to do, but perhaps has practical applications as well - putting the onus of backup back on the users.

Going viral! « On an e-journey with generation Y

Yes, This is it! This is what happens. You use a great tool with one class and it spreads to your other classes without you having to say a word! They are teaching each other in their spare time - it is the most amazing thing when you see it happen and Anne Mirtschin is blogging about it from Australia. I love Anne dearly - she is an amazing inspiration to me and works so hard!

Google Maps turns on family location services giving you the "latitude" to track people in your family. With privacy concerns abounding, the service has still launched. Take a look and incorporate this into your digital citizenship and safety discussions.

Diigo Blog » Diigo vs. Google Notebook (& importer…)

Diigo is going to work out a way to pull in your notebook into Google Lists. Time and again, Maggie Tsai and this company work to bring really cool things for educators. They are a hard working crew and I LOVE their service. Something about working with people who listen to educators.

I look forward to this!!

Speculation on the future of Google Reader

As Google shuts down unprofitable services, this thought that they'll shut down Google Reader - my trusty and favorite RSS reader just sends chills down my spine - I use it to generate my reader lists on my blogs.

I have to question that Google is not looking at the affect of what we call "penetration rate" into the services people use - if they push us to ZohoNotebook (which is what they've done) and force us to another reader, what else will we start using. Just thought Google was going in the right direction with things and now... well, they just seem to be pooping lots of parties.

  • Last night, Google announced the shutdown of many experimental products that weren’t really generating any revenue: Notebook, Dodgeball, Catalog Search, and Jaiku. One product that survived the ravaging but shares many of the same characteristics as the discontinued services also happens to be one of our favorites: Google Reader
  • Now, I think the answer to that question is unequivocally “no,” (and a Google exec has since confirmed as much) as Google has too many smart people that are connected enough to the industry to know that Reader is an essential product for many of the company’s biggest enthusiasts.

Using Google as a *free* MobileMe alternative (with push contacts & calendar) | Beau Giles

A link from twitter from rorowe (http://twitter.com/rorowe) on twitter about how to sync Gmails and calendars w/ the itouch. Plodding through this to see if it is what I want to do.

I actually looked at this and am synching through Outlook for just my personal calendar and then accessing google calendars as a web app over wifi. So, I'm just going to set this up for the contacts for now just to get them on my itouch.

  • Footnotes;

    - This will sync all your calendars, (except ones shared over your domain for Google Apps users), however they will all appear as the one calendar on your iPhone (eg. no colour coding).

    - All of your existing contacts & calendars will be wiped from your iPhone, so I’d recommend you make a backup before turning on ‘push’

Lively - Livewire Society

Students in the phillipines have made a wiki in support of Lively. They are sharing their avatars and the rooms that they have made along with screenshots of their rooms and avatars. This is a wonderful thing to see that other kids are using this website.

Kids love virtual worlds and there are great applications. Google is making a mistake. I WISH WISH they would listen to these students who see great potential.

Google Orkut users stealing photos.

Interesting comments here on this photo about Google Orkut and people stealing Flickr Pictures of children - this is from 2007 but the conversation is interesting -- we want to SHARE photos but not SHARE them in inappropriate ways -- how can we license for NON ADULT use -- and doesn't "adult" have two meanings here?
