eLearn: Case Studies - The Reluctant Online Professor
-
Great success story of an instructor who reluctantly converted a face-to-face course to an online one. Because she focused on using the technology to do things she couldn't do in a physical classroom and creating an environment for active learning, her online course was one of the most successful she has ever taught.

As it turned out, this was one of the best courses, online or onsite, I have ever taught. Not only did I witness enormous engagement among almost all of the students, but the level of learning was much higher than in previous years.
-
The feedback from the students on the course was very positive, better than I had received for the onsite course in previous years. One of my favorite written student comments was, "… I don't know how this course could be taught as effectively in the classroom."

Consensus: Podcasting Has No 'Inherent' Pedagogic Value
-
Brief summary of multiple studies on podcasts, with a link to a whitepaper for further reading. Essentially, several studies have shown that podcasts aren't automatically valuable to students; it depends on how they are used. Publishers cater to growing use of MP3s for schoolwork - CNN.com
-
This is mostly a highlight of uses of mp3s without much educational depth, but just the fact that CNN considers it newsworthy is interesting to note.

"It's interestingly changing the way in which people are educated. You just need to ask intelligent questions, and you can get answers anytime, anywhere, in real time," Taylor said. "Education becomes no longer a fact-based learning process, it's search-based, cognitive. It's kind of like what happened to math skills with the calculator."

Ideas on structuring podcasts for teaching, moving beyond simply recording a lecture
- christyinsdesign on 2007-01-29
-
In my opinion however, recording a lecture does not take full advantage of the medium’s potential. It would seem that supplemental information that takes the student past the basics provided in the lecture would provide a richer basis for reflection and dialog. Especially if our goal is to more deeply engage the student with the concepts in the course.
