ActivePresenter is a screencast/simulation tool with some similar features to Captivate. The free version can do screencasts and export them to WMV, but not simulations in Flash. You can add captions and zoom and pan even with the free version.
Free options for image editing. I've used Picasa, Paint.net, and GIMP before, but PhotoScape and PixBuilder Studio are new to me.

Comparison of free tools for online surveys
Free tool for course authoring. Screen captures and PowerPoint imports are paid extras, but the basic tool is free. Might be nice for creating portfolio samples if you don't have access to Captivate or Articulate.
Why do schools refuse to use free and open source software options, even when those options would improve accessibility for students? Ignorance? Fear? Politics? Probably some combination of all three.

If an electrician was too afraid of electricity to touch a wire, he'd be an electrician no more. So if an educator is afraid of the information and communication technologies of his/her age, then he/she can no longer be an "educator" in any meaningful way.
The Obama administration is pushing for creating free online courses at the high school/community college level, focusing on basic skills and job training. Some sort of examination/assessment is also possible, plus the idea of mixing free and paid courses at community colleges to reduce the cost of tuition.

Bonk said that administration's ideas about open courses are consistent with the "convergence" he sees taking place in online learning. There is a growing belief that for many kinds of courses, there are best providers whose work can be made available online, there are large numbers of students who could benefit from those courses, and those who might benefit don't necessarily have a lot of money.

Large list of image resources. In spite of the title, many of these also turn up copyrighted images (e.g., Google Image search), but there are some interesting collections for noncommercial use too.
David Armano on the benefits of sharing his images and how this has built his reputation. He asks that people cite him, but knows that some won't.
Examines the change in the economy to free products and services as the costs approach zero. Several models are shown, such as the "freemium" model that Flickr uses with a free service plus a premium paid service.
