Google’s Operating System to Challenge Microsoft - NYTimes.com
-
“We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the Web in a few seconds,”
-
The plan is part of Google’s bet that a huge shift in computing is under way. In Google’s view, Web connections will become so fast and browsers so powerful that most of the programs that currently run on PCs will be replaced by online applications. That would eliminate the need to install, upgrade and back up software.

Beth Simone Noveck for Democracy: A Journal of Ideas
-
Although political legitimacy demands accountability to an
electoral process, those living in a democracy readily submit to what
sociologist Michael Schudson calls the "permanent embarrassment" of
expertise. We believe that administrative governance by a professional
elite is the best way to organize decision-making in the public
interest. -
The justification for this professional decision-making,
articulated by theorists ranging from Max Weber to Walter Lippmann, is
that while citizens can express personal opinions based on values, they
are incapable of making fact-based decisions on matters of policy. - 17 more annotations...

Open innovation has value within companies
While the practices and platforms designed to support open innovation initially were focused on reaching beyond the enterprise, these same practices and platforms have application within the enterprise as well. The company has developed a specific offering known as InnoCentive@Work that allows companies to post challenging research problems solely to its own employees. Again, it is difficult to specify in advance which individuals, teams or even disciplines are likely to generate successful solutions, so executives are finding that solutions often arise from unanticipated parts of the firm.
For Fans of Drupal, a Time to Meet and Talk Code - NYTimes.com
“We’re throwing out the idea of software as a commodity and replacing it with the idea of labor and participation being valued more than ownership,”
So, 50 beginners gathered in Room 204, illuminated only by the glow of laptop screens and a beam from an overhead projector as one of those volunteers, Peter Dowling, 43, of Stamford, Conn., led them though the steps of installing Drupal on their computers.
Down the hall, in Room 200, about 20 advanced users listened to David Burns, a consultant from Philadelphia, describe ways to speed up a sluggish Web site. The audience clapped, and Mr. Burns, 27, announced that he could be found later at a nearby bar, the Zombie Hut.
