In contrast, design is often a “Trojan horse” for momentous ideas, maintains John Kao, a former academic, since it marries rigorous methods with more empathetic and intuitive ones, from lengthy anthropological studies of consumers to the production of experimental prototypes.
IDEO applied a similar approach in a campaign it devised for Bank of America. Its researchers noted that consumers feel empowered by saving even trivial sums of money, such a collections of pennies in a jar. So they came up with a scheme called “Keep the Change”, in which the bank automatically rounds up deposits to the nearest dollar—a huge hit with customers.

- Philanthropists are beginning to bring similar methods to bear on big social problems. The Gates Foundation has worked with IDEO to develop a “human-centred design toolkit” to help charities develop new programmes in collaboration with locals. VisionSpring, an American charity that sells inexpensive reading glasses to the poor, used the toolkit to make its vision tests less intimidating to children, and thus reach more of those in need.
- Even newspapers, in dire straits in much of the rich world, are embracing design thinking. Michael Maness of Gannett, which publishes USA Today among other papers, describes how employees working from IDEO’s Californian office are using “anthropological and ethnographic tools to get much closer to the consumer”. The result is a web-based news service catering to local communities (recently launched in Beta form) that he hopes will help the firm make money online.

- although the deep and rich study of people's lives is useful for incremental innovation, history shows that this is not how the brilliant, earth-shattering, revolutionary innovations come about.

  What role did design research play? What role did marketing research play? No role. All were driven by technology. In his recent study of technology, the economist Brian Arthur reached a very similar conclusion: technologies evolve from earlier technologies, driven by science, driven by engineering, driven by tinkerers of all sorts. Needs follow so slowly, that Arthur does not even cover them.
- Brand new ideas are strange and foreign. If developed within a company, they often do not fit. They compete for scarce resources with other, proven products. New ideas have to fit into the competencies of a company, they have to fit the product schedule, the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution chains. Any new idea that goes outside of the norm has introduced more barriers to success: the innovator's job is not over until all these other barriers have been taken account of, so that the entire system will work smoothly. Innovation is a systems issue; it is not about product or process: it is about the entire system.
- Often they had to be nurtured, tamed, modified, but over time, a small number found their niche: the technology launched the products. The products discovered needs. People slowly adopted them, leading to more changes in the products.
- The least interesting innovations to the university and company research community are the small, slow enhancements that gradually lower costs while improving performance. But in fact, not only is this where most product enhancement takes place, it is also where the research community can add the most value.
- This is where ethnographic observation can be powerful, discovering the difficulties people have in everyday use, the workarounds and hacks they invent that suggest product modifications. This allows existing products to be modified at low cost, low risk, yet making them ever more attractive, ever more valuable to the customer base.
