High School Academic Curriculum and Persistence Path Through College: Executive Summary

Really interesting IES report that studies the link between the rigor of a student's high school curriculum and his/her likelihood of "persisting" in college (defined as staying in the same institution and graduating in 4 years). The findings: students who take a rigorous HS curriculum are significantly more likely to persist in college than those who stick with the core- or mid-level curricula, even when SAT scores and GPA are accounted for.

He then suggests that a more effective and accurate approach is to "make the expectations more comprehensive" -- i.e. base tests on an actual curriculum instead of standards.
