Electron Configurations

  • he Aufbauprinzip (building-up principle). The structure of an atom may be built up from that of the element preceding it in the periodic system by adding one proton (and an appropriate number of neutrons) to the nucleus and one extranuclear electron.

Solutions

  • The most common type of solution involves a liquid solvent which dissolves a solid solute

The Potential Energy of Electrons

  • When unlike charges (one negative and the other positive) attract each other, or like charges (both positive or both negative) repel each other, Coulomb’s law governs the force between them.

Atomic Weights

  • Dalton, for example, studied a compound of carbon and oxygen which he called carbonic oxide

Gas Laws

  • A more convenient way of obtaining the amount of substance in a gaseous sample is suggested by the data on molar volumes in Table 9.1.

Ionic Bonding

  • The H atom has the electron configuration 1s1, and Li is 1s22s1

Atomic Structure and Isotopes

  • Because each proton and each neutron has more than 1800 times the mass of an electron
