Advice for What the Next U.S. President Should Do About Iran

The
only way to be sure of preventing Iran's acquiring a nuclear weapon
capability is to reject those calling for military action--and
to negotiate a comprehensive settlement of all outstanding
disputes between Iran and the USA, such that both sides can resume
normal relations on a basis of mutual respect at least, and friendship
if possible. -
after Baghdad fell to the coalition in spring 2003, the
Iranian government sent the US (via the Swiss government) a proposal for
talks toward a 'Grand Bargain' that promised resolution of the nuclear
dispute, and de facto Iranian recognition of Israel. The Bush
administration ignored the proposal, and rebuked the Swiss for passing
it on. - 4 more annotations...

We want the world to know that our rulers do not represent the Iranian people and that their religion is not the religion of the entire nation. We ask that in shaping its policies toward the Iranian regime, the United States not overlook the interests of Iranian civil society. In particular, we hope that America listens to those in Iran who fear that policies intended to contain the current crisis might in fact lead to a greater crisis, and to war.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran suggested yesterday that Pope Benedict XVI had satisfactorily "modified" his remarks on Islam, one sign of an apparent easing of anger since the pope issued an apology Sunday for having caused offense with a speech he delivered last week.
ISN Security Watch - Iran's chances in playing the oil card
-
In the ongoing battle between Iran and the international community over its nuclear program, some fear Tehran's ultimate weapon is not a warhead aimed at Tel Aviv, rather the possibility that Iranian leaders might reduce oil output if sanctions are slapped on the country, sending global petrol prices soaring following weeks of deflation.
Yet others are convinced that Iran would not use the threat of partially closed pumps in the event of enforced UN sanctions, saying the long-term implications to world confidence in Iran's most lucrative export would be too great a price to pay just to teach the US and other Western nations a lesson in the global game of wills.

The US sanctions already in place failed to stop Iran from producing 3.94 million barrels of crude oil per day (bpd) in 2005, which amounts to roughly 5 percent of the world's crude production. The EIA estimates that with full access to foreign investment, output could increase to 5 million bpd by 2010.

It seems increasingly likely that the Iranians either have or very soon will have nuclear weapons at their disposal, thanks to their own researches (which began some 15 years ago), to some of their obliging neighbors, and to the ever-helpful rulers of North Korea. The language used by Iranian President Ahmadinejad would seem to indicate the reality and indeed the imminence of this threat.

We also know that terrible consumption has been unleashed, especially in the developed countries, and above all, in the U.S.
The U.S. has scarcely 5% of the world's population, but it consumes over 20% of the energy produced throughout the planet. The towers of the watchamacallit... the World Trade Center consume more electricity than almost all the cities in West and Central Africa.
[...]
This emphasizes the importance of an alternative source, an alternative energy to petroleum. I recently read in the press that the U.S. administration allocated I don't know how many billions of dollars to construct I don't know how many nuclear reactors in the next decade. The same is going on in Europe. So how can anybody say that Iran does not have the sovereign right to develop nuclear energy? -
Go see if the U.S. is wiling to transfer this technology to you.
They will never do this, like they have never done in the past. They are egotists. - 1 more annotations...
