The content and lay-out of Signal were based on popular periodicals such as Life and Picture Post, where political articles alternated with everyday stories, written in a lyrical style and illustrated with full-page color photographs.
The Signal issue of March 2, 1941 published page-filling color images of Hitler’s office space. The captions meticulously describe the grandeur and decoration of the massive room in the language of a home decorating catalogue:

It's time to move on to the next stage of assessing women's literature. That's Elaine Showalter's message in her new book, A Jury of Her Peers: American Women Writers From Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx (Knopf)
The women spot more subtle indications of psychological abuse: erratic sewing indicating her state of mind, a half-cleaned table, a murdered pet canary stuffed in a sewing basket. Understanding what drove Minnie, the wife, to the madness of murder, they act as a jury of her peers — and hide the evidence.

- Why was that story forgotten until the 1970s? Why are so many works by women, best sellers in their day, still unknown?
  
  Because, says Showalter, despite almost four decades of feminist criticism and the "recovery" of women's literature and rediscovery of individual authors, there's been little attempt to pull together writing by women into a defined literary tradition.
- she writes in the tone of a manifesto: "I believe that women writers no longer need specially constituted juries, softened judgment, unspoken agreements, or suppression of evidence in order to stand alongside the greatest artists in our literary heritage.
- Literary histories, themselves, have become unpopular. There's a whole theoretical debate, for example, about whether it's even possible to combine genres, to write about history and literature together.
  
  Then many feminist critics are very much opposed to any kind of selection, ranking, even chronology. They think it's premature to establish a canon. Especially in the beginning of feminist literary studies, the feeling was: Women can't get a fair evaluation — so let's not have a trial.
- Women's writing is not determined by biology, anatomy, or psychology. It comes from women's relation to the literary marketplace, from pressures to live public and private lives, from literary influence. That's a more limited approach than trying to look at every kind of verbal expression. It's why I start with the Puritans.

La autoestima baja como la presión de mi mamá después de la ampolla. Quedo blanco, inmóvil, frenado, autómata. Depresión. Mierda. Whisky con Leo. Homosexualidad. Odio. Rabia. Violencia doméstica. Miedo. Racismo paternal. ¡Qué irracional que sos! ¡Qué poquito valen tus decisiones! Pendeja: me sacaste el output. ¿Ósmosis? ¿De qué ósmosis me estás hablando? En el vacío onírico no hay de eso. Hay nada. Y la nada incluye ganas de no pelear. Se me achican los hombros, no puedo expandir el pecho. Machismo, entre todas las fotos. Zitarrosa, también. Repetir la historia, ¡qué fracaso: de nuevo como en la adolescencia! ¿Y cuál será el próximo? Todo es blanco… blanco… blanco… Ella, en cambio, será un paliativo: tendré donde apoyar mis pies; no tendré, eso sí, de dónde alimentarme. La alimentación, como dije, está en la fuente. ¿Cuál será mi fuente? Creo que no la habrá. Conclusión: freezer. Freezer y petrificación. Vacío. Aislamiento, ceguera, sueño eterno. Dinero, comida y televisión. Hermetismo, como este cuento.

- Their engagement was sustained by a breadth of interest and knowledge that isn’t common in a world where disciplines have divided. Coleridge, totting up his abilities, could reckon on ancient and modern languages, metaphysics, politics and even chemistry as well as poetry. He ordered botanical books and microscopes for himself and Wordsworth
- The received notion was that poetry and painting were complementary, painting offering specificity, poetry supplying, among other things, the dimension of before and after, fitting a narrative to the stopped frame of the canvas.
- Turner’s poetry was much mocked – Thackeray parodied it in Punch – but the omnivorous appetite of the time that looked for connections between science, art, morality and poetry was real enough.
