Geoblocking as censoreship measure
"...While some have misleadingly suggested that outdated laws are the reason behind the blocking, the reality is that geo-blocking is invariably a business issue, not a legal one. Indeed, geo-blocking occurs worldwide - U.S. residents are similarly unable to use Spotify and are blocked from accessing the CBC’s streaming coverage of the World Cup. Rather than a reaction to older laws, the geo-blocking approach is actually an attempt to preserve an older business model, namely content licencing on a country-by-country or market-by-market approach [note that I say older, not outdated - territorial licencing obviously makes financial sense in some situations]."

"But what is the legal situation when geoblocking is enforced as a copyright management mesure? In countries that have ratified the 1996 WIPO Copyright Treaty, it is illegal to circumvent such measures, except for personal use, and it is illegal to publicize the existence of circumvention tools. So:
* When people surf with a proxy to bypass censorship, do they violate copyright law if they happen to view a video they would otherwise be geoblocked from for copyright motives?
* When human rights activists give info about using proxies to access geoblocked-for-censorship content, do they violate copyright law because the same proxies can be used to view geoblocked-for-copyright content?"

They approached Adam Sadowsky, president of Syyn Labs (http://syynlabs.com/) to design a Rube Goldberg inspired machine in which they would base their music video around. After months of preparation and 20 consecutive 18 hr days, they finally got the perfect take. Adam explains all the tedious fun!

"The new video, "This Too Shall Pass," was posted on YouTube on Monday and has been viewed more than 1.2 million times. The 3 minute, 53 second song features a giant, musically timed Rube Goldberg machine -- like the board game Mouse Trap, only way bigger -- and a few subtle State Farm mentions."
"... A few years ago, reeling from plummeting record sales, record companies went after YouTube, demanding payment for streams of their material. They saw videos, suddenly, as potential sources of revenue. YouTube agreed to pay the record companies a tiny amount for each stream, but - here's the crux of the problem - they pay only when the videos are viewed on YouTube's own site. \n...\nThe numbers are shocking: When EMI disabled the embedding feature, views of our treadmill video dropped 90 percent, from about 10,000 per day to just over 1,000. Our last royalty statement from the label, which covered six months of streams, shows a whopping $27.77 credit to our account.\n\nClearly the embedding restriction is bad news for our band, but is it worth it for EMI? The terms of YouTube's deals with record companies aren't public, but news reports say that the labels receive $.004 to $.008 per stream, so the most EMI could have grossed for the streams in question is a little over $5,400.
