GM cuts shifts to curtail SUV, truck production
General Motors Corp announced on Monday that it will have to cut thier shifts in Ohio and Louisiana in the plants, because of weak demand for SUV and trucks by consumers. By this action they will eliminate many jobs, about 1, 760. Tony Sapienza, who is a spokesman of GM said, that they will have to cut the shifts in all the plants in Moraine, Ohio, SUV and Shreveport as all of them were producing trucks, so they will eliminate the production by about 117, 000 vehicles. The workers of course are not satisfied. In Moriane about 1000 people will loose their job and at Shreveport about 760.

Frod turning away from truck production
The oil price crisis continues to make victims and Ford Motor Co. is on the list. Due to the soaring of oil price in the US the icon of American automaking has registered the worst quarterly loss of his history, losing $8.7 billion on its truck-heavy line from North America.
As it is, on Thursday Ford announced that six small, fuel-efficient cars will be brought from its successful European line to North America, thus switching from truck production to car manufacturing. However, the plans will be finished only in 2010 and they will have to survive by then. Will they succeed?
Geoff Polites dies at 60
Geoff Polites is a name the common people may not be very familiar with but it is well known in the world of automobile industry. Mr. Polites was CEO (Chief Executive Director) of Jaguar and Land Rover. However, sad news reached the public about his death. He passed away on Sunday in his home town, Melbourne, Australia after struggling with cancer for two years. He died at the age of 60. He became Jaguar Land Rover CEO in 2005 and was praised mainly because of his successful efforts to make the companies profitable again. He also organized the sale of the two brands to India's Tata Motors Ltd. Ford, which bought Jaguar in 1989 and Land Rover in 2000, will receive $1.7 billion from Tata.“Geoff''s untimely passing robs his family and friends of a man who was a real inspiration to us all,†said Alan Mulally, president and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company. “His leadership of the team that has put the Jaguar Land Rover business back into profitability has been exceptional. Geoff has given Jaguar Land Rover the solid foundation and established the strong management team it needs for a successful future. We will miss our friend very much,†added Lewis Booth, executive vice president of Ford´s European units. The position of CEO will be temporarily undertook by Chief financial officer David Smith until a permanent successor is selected. Geoff Polites had been with Ford for nearly 40 years. He was born in 1948 in Melbourne where he graduated from Monash University and received an economics degree. In 1970 he was hired as a product planner for Ford. Then he held several executive positions with the company in Australia and Europe and in 1999 he became president of Ford Australia. He left behind his wife Linda and two sons.

GM layoffs by Claudia Sonea
It is rumored for General Motors Corp. to restructure its workers and move them from one factory to another due to the unstable US gas market. The company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner will either confirm this news next week at their annual meeting. In the meantime, officially GM announced that a quarter of its hourly labor work was bought out in order to hire some new ones that would work for a half of what the former ones received.
