Teaching and technology ~ presentations and resources for educators
-
During the last six or so years I have created
a number of 'how-to' documents and presentations
for a variety of web based and related
technologies.
They are available from the various workshop
web pages however I thought it might prove
helpful to link to all the documents
from a single page. Some of my workshop
participants have referred to these documents
as 'cheat sheets'.

How schools get it wrong - thestar.com

Today, many parents and teachers believe that the best defence against an uncertain future is to teach children to learn how to learn. To them, that is the goal of education.
They believe the education system should unearth and ignite their children's passion, their intrinsic desire to learn, the deep joy of discovery.

It is a vision completely at odds with the goals of much of the modern education system.

With Tight Budgets, Schools Cancel Trips - WSJ.com
-
St. Paul Academy and Summit School in St. Paul, Minn., where high-school tuition is $23,500 a year, canceled overnight student wilderness trips for ninth- and twelfth-graders, replacing them with less-expensive events in town. We "had a predictable decline in the endowment area," says Bryn Roberts, head of the school. And the school provided financial aid to 13% more families this year compared to last, he says.
Instead of two nights at a wilderness camp doing pre-high-school bonding, ninth-graders participated in three days of local activities, such as climbing a high-ropes course at a nearby park, eating staff-cooked burgers and singing songs around a bonfire on school grounds, and performing community service with Feed My Starving Children, a local charity.
"Clearly, budget cutting was a motivating factor behind these changes," says Chris Hughes Principal of the Upper School. But "once we thought about it in a different way, this was a much stronger program." Adding the community-service component and being able to directly control the programming and including more group activities made for a better experience for the children and the staff, according to Mr. Hughes. The school plans to stick with the new programs even in flush future years, he says.

A Netbook for Every Student
-
“We needed something that would fit on the desk with a textbook, something with a 7- to -9-inch screen and without this big DVD, because kids run around with flash drives and iPods and don’t need the CD drives anymore.”
Setting up your Classroom for Netbooks
-
We have found the most affordable and easy way to store netbooks are just put them in plastic bins. We drilled holes in the backs of them and mark each hole with the corresponding number to match the netbooks. We then put the charger cords through the holes then plugged all the chargers in to power strips and we are ready to go. Most netbooks come with a storage sleave which we have the students put the netbooks back into when they put them in the bins and attach them to the chargers.
TEaching with Netbooks

So what you really want is for a netbook to be far more than just a computer, you want it to be a tool that students use to gain fantastic 21st Century skills to prepare them for world we cannot even imagine right now

all netbooks have smaller keyboards than regular sized laptop computers.

Add Sticky NoteHere's an easy way to hide your Windows PC on a network while maintaining access to network resources. (This also works when you want stealth but still want to let others access your shared resources.) At the command prompt, type
Net config server /hidden:yes. Now you're still a member of your network neighborhood but your PC won't show up when others browse for it. Make sure your software firewall is turned on, and block incoming ICMP traffic. This will prevent a network intruder from scanning for your PC using a ping sweep.- Garry, will this work on our network? - on 2009-05-19

The Netbook Models You Love (And Don’t) | Smarterware

Cheap and tiny netbook computers are so very tempting in this crappy economy, since they promise the full computing experience in a compact, throw-in-your-messenger-bag package for less than $400. The idea of a netbook got under my skin because I want a light computer for traveling that can live in the kitchen and living room for cooking and couch-surfing when I’m home. In the throes of my netbook lust, recently I asked my Twitter followers if they had a netbook and if it was worth it. That tweet drew a whopping 243 passionate replies.
