25 Free Apps And Websites For Tech-Loving Teachers | Blogging & Technology | So You Want To Teach? | Diigo
Whether you’re looking for ways to incorporate technology into the classroom or into your daily life, the Internet has the tools you need. There are lots of free web apps and websites designed specifically for tech-loving teachers on a tight budget:
Google Assistant - Surf Canyon :: Add-ons for Firefox
This add-on automates the discovery of relevant information buried in the search results on Google, Yahoo!, Bing or Craigslist.
Simply enter your query at one of these search engines as you always would. When you click a result that appeals to you, the application automatically re-ranks the result set in order to bring forward what you need while suppressing what you don’t want. “Recommended” results can come from as deep as page 100, where virtually no one ever looks, but often come from pages 2-10. Surf Canyon also inserts optional “bull’s eye” icons to the search page to enable retrieving recommendations immediately, without having to actually click the particular result.
http://my.SurfCanyon.com further enables you to specify the websites you prefer as well as those you dislike. Preferred content is naturally moved forward in the search results while disliked content is removed altogether. Additionally, you can even insert real-time search results from Twitter and OneRiot. The “Settings” are available here as well as an “Odometer” that will measure the mileage you’re getting out of Surf Canyon.

Nov 8 2009: I think that Mr. Berners-Lee's exciting speech anticipates future trends. And when I say 'future', I mean very near future and not the long-term perspective. However, this 'Raw-Data' idea raises many questions.
First, creating unlimited access to data worldwide means that Intra-nets (supported by government agencies, companies and individuals) have to be merged into the Internet extensively. This will require to overcome desire to hold control, corporate greed and security concerns. Will a multinational company want competitors to gain access to its customer base? Will CIA permit anyone to view security-related data?
Secondly, this model of data exchange stipulates that current copyright model should be revised and changed to facilitate the information flow. As we have seen lately, information flow in the Internet breaks clashes with the strict limitations imposed by 20th century legal norms. Unless this limitation is removed, 'monopoly' for data will still be there.

Mar 14 2009: It's a great idea for the potential benefits, but the talk didn't attempt to address any of the obvious concerns, such as privacy.
