"Last week I wrote about a talk I gave with the title “Innovation inducement prizes as a possible mechanism to unlock the benefits of open innovation models”. I explored the idea of inducement prizes then, and now I'd like to look at open innovation."
"Unfortunately, it’s easier to mess it up than to get it right, and the result is that employees end up confused, frustrated, and stifled. Here are six things that a lot of leaders and companies do to stifle innovation. Keep in mind that a lot of these things are done for good reasons — organization, systemization, and efficiency. Nevertheless, the effect is the same."
"It reflects a pattern that I often talk about: When a company discovers something that is truly exciting, others copy and follow, to the point that what was once the object of techno-lust becomes a non-negotiable prerequisite. Expensive to develop? Sure. Difficult to deliver flawlessly? Of course. Making a competitive difference? Unfortunately, only if your offer isn't as good as the other guy's and then only in the negative."
"Intuit, developer of Quicken and QuickBooks business financial management software, announced it is unveiling a website where developers can collaborate to solve some of the company's biggest product challenges and win a $10,000 challenge. ... "The talent at Intuit is impressive, but we know that we don't have all the answers," said Jan Bosch, VP of open innovation at Intuit. "Our history is built on a mix of home-grown and outside development.""
"These six ideas emerged in 2010 as powerful "innovation invitations" and seem sure to intensify in power and influence. They'll increasingly be a source of, and resource for, innovation differentiation in 2011, if not for your organization, then for the firm you most dread competing against."
"The latest international tests meant to measure the academic aptitude of 15-year-olds--the Program for International Student Assessment, whose results were released on Dec. 7--show that American students continue to lag those in other countries in math and science. In math, American students ranked 31st among 65 countries and below the average of countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In science, American students ranked 23rd, on par with the OECD average. American 15-year-olds fared similarly on the 2006 PISA tests: 32nd in math and 23rd in science."
"But the best role model is Eclipse, formed through IBM's 2001 donation of its Java development software. IBM executives decided to share control when they realized "they needed Eclipse to become independent to achieve their strategic goal to have the broader Java ecosystem adopt Eclipse," says Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. Since then, the foundation has been able to attract outside participation not only through its formal processes, but also through new bottom-up initiatives created and led by outsiders."
"So one of the things that’s clear is that even though the room represents hundreds of open source conference and journal papers, few of them have read any of the social science research on open source."
"The problem comes when the competition becomes uncontrolled and destructive. At Microsoft, it has created a dysfunctional corporate culture in which the big established groups are allowed to prey upon emerging teams, belittle their efforts, compete unfairly against them for resources, and over time hector them out of existence. It’s not an accident that almost all the executives in charge of Microsoft’s music, e-books, phone, online, search and tablet efforts over the past decade have left."
"Apple represents the “auteur model of innovation,” observes John Kao, a consultant to corporations and governments on innovation. In the auteur model, he said, there is a tight connection between the personality of the project leader and what is created. Movies created by powerful directors, he says, are clear examples, from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” to James Cameron’s “Avatar.” "
